One BEAST of a 740iL
At first glance, Simeon Mackrides' E38 740iL looks normal enough. But then you see the Fikse wheels and the big Brembo brakes lurking beneath them. And those headlights aren't stock, are they? With your curiosity piqued, you lift the hood, and you see the Vortech supercharger.
A Getrag six-speed was an option for the E38 in Europe, but of course nothing about this project could be simple: The European E38 with that option was a 740i Sport. The 740iL is a longer car, which meant a custom driveshaft would be required. And then there was the matter of the M5 clutch and flywheel that go in front of that six-speed tranny. The flywheel weighed 38 pounds, leading VAC's Tony Salloum to recommend something lighter. Salloum designed a new flywheel, and using the CDC machine in his shop, he fabricated the new sixteen-pound part from an aluminum billet (see July 2003 Roundel). An E39 3:15 limited slip differential, requiring a custom mount for the Seven, capped the driveline work.
Oh----and then there was the engine.
Tony Salloum exercises Baby, the 740iL? Sport.
Even before Mackrides decided to order a supercharger, VAC was at work on the Seven's engine, porting and polishing the heads, modifying the valve guides and followers, and installing an external oil cooler. Then the VAC techs had to do more engine work when installing the European Supercharging Systems (ESS) supercharger, as considerable modifications to engine plumbing were required.
And Salloum was not about to let a big sedan with all that power out of the shop without adding some very serious brakes. Exit the already-strong Dinan Stage 1 system, and enter a set of Brembo 355-mm GT F1 brakes. And there were other VAC-installed modifications as well, including coil-overs and heavy-duty springs, a B&M billet aluminum shifter, a BMW 740i Sport (Euro) pedal assembly, and a set of Fikse FM-10 wheels, 18x8.5" in front and 18x9.5" in back, shod with Pirelli P-Zero Asymmetrico tires, 255/45/ZR18 in front and 285/40/ZR18 in back. And removable TeamTech five- point harnesses for driver and passenger were installed----requiring, of course, a little custom welding for installation.
The engine and MT transmission get a big
