Question thoughts on porsche 944

Has anyone ever owned a 944? I have always thought they looked sexy but i know jack about them when it comes to capabilities and reliablity. Are the 4cyl turbos worth buying? Im just curious.

O.L.T. is that your house? That place is nice!

The 944 were $$$$ to repair. Great cars, but most wind up being money pits.

nice!!! my main questions were, is the 4cyl turbo fast? Are they high maintenance cars (ie the tranny doesnt give at 100k miles or if the turbo goes out early), is there alot of aftermarket opportunity with the 4cyl? Also was the engine easy to repair your self? since im not at all familiar with the 944's im only wondering if they are as tricky as the porsche flat 6cyl.
Black 944s look so damn sexy to me. that yellow is hot as well

The 951 turbo (944T) in stock form racing an M3 in stock form will wipe the road up with it, in any year. Even on BFC (bimmerforums) they tremble and bow dow to give respect. You can go search my user name over there (one) and see threads i have been in where M3 guy's admit defeat. So, fast? Uh-huh I gave my SC400 a 5 second head start off the line and caught up to it at 105 mph then proceeded to pull up to 152 mph and let off.

Mods are VERY plentiful, you need to visit rennlist.com and check out things that have been done to members 951T's You need a few specialty tools for some things like the balance shafts and other items, but you can do the work yourself if you are mechanical.

If buying 7 of them doesn't convince you i like them, nothing will pound for pound there isn't a car that can do what it does within $30k from the factory without serious mods. rated "one of the very best handling cars in the world" and at one time "THE very best handling car in the world".

0-60 - 5.9 secs
top speed from the factory 149 mph (car is geared low, awsome launches)
still pulls enormous g-pad numbers and is a 20 yr old design.
I have heard a few gripes, like the rear ring and pinion shaft + bearing, however i have NEVER broken one out of 7 different 944's i have had.

Basically maintenance is the key. buy one with complete records and you'll LOVE it.

I had an '86 944 Turbo with a simple chip mod for the engine and turbo the car was easily doing 170MPH

1st gear went to 55MPH
2nd spun the tires at 55MPH
3rd gear I could chirp the tires at 90MPH when I was shifting into it.
4th Gear wound out at about 140MPH
5th never seemed to end and was VERY solid at 170MPH+

I've had the car with cruise control on at 145MPH, the only problem at that speed was the windshield wipers would crawl up the windshield and be in your way.

You may also want to check into the RX7 Turbos, that was the only car that ever kept up, other then a Mustang with a supercharged 351 Cleveland and nitrous that made me look like I was standing still

BTW I changed the clutch 3 times at $2200 each time with about 25K miles on each clutch.

sounds great! the thing that scares me is the tranny, being that i want a manual and i will have the urge to let it loose everynow and then. Also i have heard nothing but great things about them on the x-cross, so i might take that up as well if i were to get one. I have been looking around for one and the best thing i have found is http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...or=&cardist=16

It looks to be in PERFECT condition, however it is red, and not a turbo. What does the S mean? i will wait till i find a low mileage turbo, which will most likely be along long time.

Yes, wait. the N/A -S is S-L-O-W.

also, there are several high performance clutches, just do it right the first time you swap and you are done!

944 is a GREAT car. The handling is absolutely incredible. So balanced. So capable. Just a HOOOT to drive!

OLT - I was sorely tempted to get the one you put up for sale... I'm sure the person who bought it must be loving it.
