They are small and they drive like ***** too.
The auto box is really bad and there is just no power.
One thing it can do really well is save gas.
There is one guy in the UK that did a motorswap in one, he put in a 1000cc suzuki bike engine (165hp).

Not good if you hit another Smart or a tree or something similar.
So, just aim for other cars in a crash and you will be fine, most likely.

I saw it when I went to England couple of years ago and I think it so cool and small enough to park in any limited space.
But, I don't think it will work well in U.S, because of the big SUV's and trucks we got over here. Those soccer moms with the biggest SUV's on the market driving on the highway VS Smart...you know the result.

When I went to Italy a few years ago I saw a bunch of those. It was cool when my tall cousin's wingspan was about the same of the car. 
It was weird seeing people unfold as they got out too.
