Default Possible Toyota Powered Lotus Esprit

An excerpt from an article in the latest issue of R&T:

"This new esprit( which will probably carry a different name at its debut) will likely be powered by a mid-mounted v-8 with either turbo or supercharging. The elise now has a Toyota engine, so look for the compact v8 to come from that Japanese automaker"
great!
Suspension tuned by Lotus, with a Toyota powerplant

Turbo 3UZ. Or is that too big of an engine for Lotus? I think it would be damn good of an idea.

Wink Long way home

Yep...Lotus (like most British products) has come a long way from the old Lucas a-fire-a-day electronics and fix-it-again, Jeeves.

A 1UZ-FE TT would be perfect I think. Slightly tuned to push out 400-500HP is not bad at all but a 3UZ TT would be even nicer. I remember Toyota having a couple V8 race engine. I think its the R36V from what I remember putting out something like 600 or 650HP from I think 3.5 or 3.6L Its been so long I dont really even remember. Lotus is really making a nice move tho. A nice V8 from toyota with the body of a lotus. You just cant go wrong from that. Add a tubro or two and you got one of the hottest supercars priced lower than its competition. Now thats great marketing

does toyota ever put TT on 1UZ as factory engine? i would be 1UZ-GTE then huh?
i agree that lotus body with toyota powerplant would make one of the best/most reliable supercars around.

I knew the Elise was light but 1894lbs. Thanks 1000lbs less than an S2000.
No wonder it does 0-60 in 4.9sec and 13's at the 1/4mi

I think the only tubroed V8 Toyota has made was for racing and I think it was the 1UZ. As far as I know I think thats the only one, I think they kept the engine code 1UZ-FE tho

M5's engine could power next Esprit
The next Lotus Esprit is tipped to use one of Autocar’s favourite engines of recent years: BMW’s firecracker V8 from the recently departed M5 saloon (right).

Senior-placed sources have confirmed that Hethel is considering the 4.9-litre lump from the outgoing E39 5-series. Lotus had previously been linked with Toyota, following the deal to supply the Celica engine for the latest Elise 111R.

In BMW’s application, the V8 developed 400bhp and 369lb ft of torque. Lotus is considering a forced induction system to raise outputs further and has proven experience from turbocharging the previous Esprit.

Following the classic supercar formula, the V8 will be mounted longitudinally amidships in the Esprit’s extruded aluminium chassis, driving the rear wheels. The car’s modern, wedgy shape was first revealed in our scoop on 3 February.

The current Esprit ceased production this spring and its successor – tipped to carry a different name – will be launched in 2006. Priced at around £75,000, it will rival supercars such as the Porsche 911 Turbo, Ferrari 360 Modena and Lamborghini Gallardo.
