I finally decided I've got enough $$ invested in my GS to get an aftermarket alarm system for a little extra protection and decided on a Viper 850. One of the options is a voice module.

Yes, I think the old school "protected by Viper, stand back" is terribly stupid... but when I was joking about it with the installer I innocently asked - hey maybe you could do it in Japanese so I could have a JDM sounding alarm . My jaw dropped when he said "I can do that".

Apparently you can plug in a Japanese or Spanish module to the talking option. I keep thinking it would be cool if somebody kicked my tire and a Japanese guy came on and said something (in Japanese) "hey, get away!", lol. More for the humor factor than anything else.

The down side is I might get tired of it OR it might invite a lot of extra tire kicking...

What do you guys think?

 

If your going for the JDM look, feel and sound, then it's a go. But only if you can get it to say "Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto".

 

Dave, I don't think it's stupid at all. However, a couple years ago I remember some punk kids playing around with a Honda Accord that was sitting in a parking lot of a super market. The accord had a voice activated "step away" feature that was inticing the kids to keep getting closer to the car just to hear it's voice. After standing next to the car for several minutes (and several voice warnings) the alarm finally went off and the kids just walked away laughing. Make sure the installer adjusts the sensitivity levels to a point that doesn't have the alarm going off all the time.

If you decide to get this done, give us a feedback on install and your thoughts. I've been told by many installers that adding a high-end alarm on our cars is a PITA...

 

I've got the alarm in today (took all day) except for the tilt sensor and the voice piece (if I decide to do it). The install team I went to is pretty good and they did all the homework on installing in the GS before I showed up - you're right it was a complex install with lots of connections all over the car. The salesguy said the installer was crying once he started reading the tech sheets for our car.

I did not want two way paging (I'm seldom close enough to my car to make it worthwhile) or a motions sensor perimeter outside the car, so I shouldn't have the problem with kids getting close to the car. Only if it gets bumped, kicked, etc. will it talk.

 

I installed one once for a guy that had a programmable voice. He had it setup to be a woman screaming RAPE!! ............ his car NEVER had anything stolen from it .

on topic: I think the talking alarms are kinda played nowadays, kinda reminds me of the old "you door is a ajar" prompts in old chryslers!! LOL

I never had any idea how serious an alarm install was, until I got one for my 1st Gen

Dave, did you set it up so it does not blink your headlights? I don't think thats good if you have HIDs

Yeah, hot restriking arc discharge lamps isn't the best thing. Could you set it up to blink the inner halogen high beam/DRL bulb or the parking lights instead?

 

That's exactly what it does - just the inner parking lights blink.

I agree on the played comment on the 'regular' voice - the only thing that has me considering it is that I can get it to speak Japanese.

 

Now that I think about it, if your car did that, you would have a dead battery everyday! I know I would just keep walking around your car, to hear that damn voice!!

 

The problem is once they see that a car has a voice alarm people tend to harass the car for fun. Also it can **** people off even more then a normal car alarm.

I wish I had one that said:

*WARNING! WARNING! ACTIVATING PEPPER SPRAY MISTERS!*

Then have those water things that keep your intercooler cool (the name slips me) mist out water at the people messing with my car.

 

Sorry Dave, but I'm going to have to give it a . I think it would be amusing at first, but I would tire of it pretty quickly. I vote NO on any talking alarm.

I agree that it would probably tempt people to screw around with your car even more, especially if it was speaking Japanese. Also things talking that don't need to talk seems kind of 80's. I wouldn't call it "stupid" though. I wouldn't call it "cool" either.

 

I heard that people are insulted when they hear a car talk to them... so sometimes the crazy ones will smash the windows, etc..

 

Isnt there one where you can record your own voice? I thought that would be pretty cool to say:

"Get away from my F****ing car" ...
