Default How far would you drive your car before renting?

Would you take your car to any roadtrip, or does it make sense to rent a car, when going on a really long drive?

For me, not over a day's drive, which usually means under 500 miles. I can have enough fun with my car driving one full day. I won't even drive a rental car for long cross continent trips from an economical standpoint unless you have full load of 5 person sharing the expense of one car, which makes it uncomfortable for a long trip anyway, plus factoring in the motel & gas expenses for a 2 day or more road trip, it's usually more economical & comfortable to fly & then rent a car when you reach your destination.
I' ve tried driving non-stop with 4 person taking turns as driver across the continent until we arrive at our destination in my college days, but I won't even think of doing that now, it's just not the safest & most comfortable way for long distance travel.

SexySC covered some good points regarding pros/cons of taking a road trip. I always take into account various expenditures like gas, food, tolls and lodging, if the trip is at least 300 miles one-way. If the trip is as long as 2 or 3 time zones away or up/down the coastal U.S., then the best bet would be to fly out (and rent a car). I don't feel too comfortable of the idea of renting a car for long-distance trips; all the costs add up, and who knows how well-maintained the rental really is I'm better off driving my own or a friend's vehicle.

Just my $.02.

i would fly only if it's absolutely necessary. I rather drive anywhere/everywhere in my own car.

I drive if it's a 1 day trip to my destination as that's usually faster than flying.
