Ev and Phev, power grid thought experiment
I thought I'd go ahead and start a new thread and have a place dedicated to talk about this- instead of it coming up in other EV threads.
Just a thought experimemt on Evs and Phevs when it comes to power grids.
As you all know. I say just build more power grids! 😀📣💯
But others may disagree.
(Fair warning, political posts and political dog whistling will be reported immediately)
Please make your best case and play fair and lift your fellow members up.
>> Ev owners, please go easy on the noobs...

The grid has plenty of capacity.
Regardless, EVs account for a small percentage of total electricity consumption. By most estimates it's well under 1%.
Furthermore, EV owners are broadly incentivized to charge overnight when rates are at their lowest because excess capacity is at its greatest
There was no federal mandate to move to all electric vehicles. The fear-mongering relating to future EV impact on grid capacity was mostly mischievous.

I've heard a lot of arguements shaming Ev owners for loading the grid and stuff.
I never bought into that idea.
Everyone pays for whatever electric they use anyway.
Just ideas, please feel free to shoot it down.

The whole argument is just people who are anti-EV grasping at straws. These same people have no issue with the construction of AI data centers which use massive amounts of electricity. They also don't conserve energy in their own lives, or worry about people who have heated pools or hot tubs or other power hungry things in their own homes. These people are also usually anti goiv't incentives for things like green building credits which incentivize the construction of energy efficient buildings, which shows they aren't actually worried about electricity demand.

Wanna know where all the data centers are going? North Virginia, right outside of DC. And the same people that want you to cut back and drive what they want you to drive don't say a thing about it. Why? Because they want all that tax revenue.
Here in PA they shut down and dismantled a coal fired power plant in Homer city PA. Then a new gas fired power plant is proposed to be built to power only the data center (on the same property) so they state many new jobs being created and the locals are realizing they may be paying more for electricity.
Also a large water reservoir will be used from the old power plant to cool the data center.
We will see how this all comes together for job creation and how we fair with our electric bills.

I agree with Frank. More Nuclear-reactor power-plants and more generation. The more AI centers get built, and the more people drive and charge EVs, the more critical this will become to avoid power losses. This will also create a lot more JOBS.
That's not true. There is a huge pushback on data centers here in SC. People understand supply and demand, no matter where the demand comes from.
