CV boot maintenance-2007 Avalon
2007 avalon 165k miles. Bought & used in Delaware from 2007 to 2019, then transported to Florida. November 2023 inspection after 7 months of 34 miles each way (20 of which was highway) 4 days a week, found right inner cv boot spit out a lot of grease. There is a slight tear under larger clamp. Boots might be original equipment from 2007. 34 mile job ended at 7 months. Since then very little but occasional highway usage. 2 years & 5800 miles later with very little highway driving only sees a little more grease spit out. We want this axle to last as long as possible. Years ago I bought needle fitting for my grease gun to fill my original taco ball joints that hav no fittings. 6 months after buying taco new in 2003 the boots started separating from ball joints. Yota would not replace under new vehicle warranty. After 5 more years they all separated. Every few years since then i poke new holes & inject grease. I can never find the old holes. I just bought cartridge of cv boot grease. I know about centrifugal force, but still think that injecting grease into cv boot will save the joint from failing before the boot fails. The joint is not making noise. Yes I know replacing axle is the through fix, but Id like to wait until a boot totally fails. Remember inner boots flex much less. Thoughts? Paul
are you suggesting to constantly refill the boot with grease as it slings out at every drive?!
at least for me, i found no way to "band aid" a compromised CV boot. i suppose you can reposition another clamp over the tear to limp along but at some point a boot replacement at a minimum will be necessary.

Don't replace your axles because you have grease leaking out, and don't just keep refilling the joints as this will make a mess as the grease slings everywhere. Instead, have the axles removed, cleaned of all old grease, and have new OEM boots and grease installed.
Too, don't buy aftermarket axles...they're $%#@!

Yeah, putting grease inside the boot does not do much for the joint, unless, possibly, you put so much into it that the grease has no where else to go. Otherwise, the grease has no way of making its way into the joint area on its own. The boots keep grease from getting on the ground, and keeps contaminants from going into the joint. Patch it if you can. Otherwise, replace the CV shaft when the CV goes bad. A big concern for a car from the north is a rusted center bearing on the passenger side CV. It can make replacing the CV very challenging.
