I am surprized.
I thought Lexus was supposed to be reliable - especially the LS460.

They are reliable if you stick to their mainstream offerings, if you move up to actually high tier cars they drop while the Germans gain drastically.

He won’t have to on a RX450HL which checks his boxes…3 row SUV, fuel efficient, doesn’t require wrenching,

I want a 3rd row SUV, I would prefer NOT to have the sophisticated hybrid stuff, though in toyota/lexus' case it’s not a deal killer. I really love the GX460s, but it seems that the RX350L has more cargo space behind the 3rd row, and has significantly better fuel economy and road manners. So I don't know. I have honestly thought about buying a 2017 LS460 with the lowest miles I can find too, but again, there are elephant's in the room with these cars that I just don't care to deal with.
RX450HL. Though the 3rd row is for a toddler or a preteen. Close family member recently went from a 3 row RX to TX.

In our old RX450h from the dealership (I reset it before we left) to 47k miles later my wife averaged 27mpg and she drives like Striker and idles like every other mom in carpool and drive thru lines. I could easily get 30-35mpg driving it.

The steering on our RX450h was a lot more smooth than on our 570. I believe RX had electric steering whereas the LX isn’t. Not sure if GX is same as LX. But it’s the first thing I noticed driving the LX after owning the RX. Test drove GX460 prior to the LX and it was immediate no. Just wasn’t for us.

If you want max reliability out of an RX the hybrid is actually the better choice, the trans is the eCVT and never fails or has any sort of problems. Accessories are also much more resilient and if the goal is to just drive and not touch it the hybrids are better for that

The GX is essentially just a 4Runner with all the same packaging and rust issues, if you aren't going to leverage the off road aspects it's just not as refined. The LX at least has the AHC suspension to give it a flagship esque ride
Driving my PHEV RAV4 made my wife miss our RX450H and it was the beginning of the end for the LX 570

Pretty sure you have never owned a car of this caliber. I have owned several, and have stepped down from that to a transverse/FWD Lexus. So, I think my viewpoint has merit since thats specifically what he is considering doing. I don't recommend it unless its something you have to do, after being used to a car like the LS something like an RX or a Highlander etc won't be fulfilling from my own experience.

Do it! lol

When I got the 03 ES300 I couldn't afford a new LS, and I chose the new ES vs a CPO 2000 LS400 really just because I wanted a new car and because I wanted to lease for business. I also wanted the newer and much better navigation in the new ES300 since I was getting into the real estate business. Same when I got the 2010 ES350, I seriously considered a CPO 2006 LS430, but I wanted new and wanted to lease. If I had it to do over again I would have gone used and gotten the LSs both times.

We were close to owning a GH platinum hybrid max after the LX 570. My wife really considered it. But then again it could’ve been mostly she was ready to move on from the LX.

I sold my LS460 for my FK8.

LS460 probably best overall car I’ve had but FK8 a lot more fun.

A nice black LS460 SWB pulled next to me on highway today on our roadtrip and I told my wife I really liked our LS then I downshifted the Supra

Sounds like OP may be ready for something different as I was. Midlife crisis 🫠

Getting something very different is not the same thing. In my case I went to a similar type of car just much cheaper and less sophisticated. When it’s a totally different sort of car you’re not always comparing it to the much better car you had.

If I was going to get something much cheaper, which I have considered, I would get an SUV. I wouldn’t however go to a FWD based SUV.

The RX hybrid has VGRS by default I believe, it makes the steering feel a hell of a lot better than a fixed ratio rack.

Get an AWD and the Elate supercharger kit and you have a pocket A8 that's a little overweight! Or go with a 600hL full exec pack to get the smoothest thing Lexus has ever made

I also agree with this, I do not compare my Volvo to my cars for example....I compare it to my Jeep and it's way better on road and comfort wise.

They are very easy to use and good enough quality, long wearing as well IMO. Controls are simple and quick to use

Combine all that with the easy to work on packaging with the 3.2 XC90 and idiot proof crash rating and high resistance to rust and I like the overall offering more than I initially expected to.

lol… talk about this thread being all over the map.

the 600hL is also VERY hard to find. lexus clearly didn’t sell many and i think a lot of owners just hang on to them.
