Every dealer is free to sell cars at whatever price they want. That doesn't make it "transparent".
Dealers that add on ADMs are being "transparent" too-- Here's the MSRP, and here's our $5,000 ADM, and here's our $2,000 mandatory "Accessories Package". They aren't hiding anything - it's right there on the window sticker.....
Using the word "transparent" appeals to customers who don't like the negotiation process in buying a car; it has nothing to do with the actual selling price. It makes people "feel" like they are getting a good deal. Looking for a car years ago, I contacted a Toyota dealer that had "no-haggle" pricing; their "no-haggle" price was the highest of 6-7 dealers I contacted (before any haggling even took place).
Sure, but they'll also take out the old 4 box and go "talk to the finance manager" for 30 minutes. No one's saying it'll be the best deal, but it'll definitely be the easiest.
As others have mentioned, go to Carmax and others to get a baseline for your trade.
Then, go online and get each dealers best price for the vehicle you want. I would go much further than 200 miles away. If you sell your current vehicle to Carmax or whatever you can buy your new vehicle from almost anywhere. Time it with a vacation and drive the new car home….

LOL - the "4 box" is the most anti-"transparent" way to sell a car....
Exactly, which is why things like "transparent" pricing are appealing. Some folks enjoy the whole negotiation song and dance and others don't. When I bought the GS and my Ody, I gave them an OTD price and a warning that if I was left alone for more than 10 minutes I'd be walking out the door. Did I overpay in relation to someone who spent a few hours there haggling? I definitely did, but I value my time more.
it's also why people enjoy the direct sales model that Tesla uses. You get your price and (at least for that day) no one is getting a better or worse deal
