So you are OK @mmarshall with having no regulations when it comes to safety, do I understand you correctly? If so, there are a lot countries I've travelled to you would love that have ZERO crash regulations. Zero seat belt regulations. Zero Smog regulations. Zero air quality regulations. Zero almost any regulations. Of course people die of lung diseases, minor car crashes and even when they drink the water. But hey, you'll save a lot of money
mmarshall worked in the federal government (for decades i believe) in a highly regulated industry, so i've no doubt he does not want NO safety regulations!
any sane person knows some regulations are necessary, and they're always a compromise of allowing innovation while managing risk. there's no perfect regulations or amount of regulations, but we all know too much is suffocating, and too little is dangerous.

I'm also not for business crushing regulations, but when it comes to vehicle safety, I want to know that at least the automaker (or other industry) meets some minimum standard, and they are not lying about it. Unfortunately, only government can oversee and enforce safety standards
You just said you didn't move any goal posts, but at the same time admitted they are moveable When it comes to safety, there can be no moveable goal posts, IMO.
Technically goal posts moving would be a lot safer for the passengers.

agreed. i have a problem with car companies doing their own EPA tests for example.

I don't even care if it meets a minimum standard, I just care that when I ask "so how does it do in a crash" I'm not lied to. If I ask and they say "the wheel will ****** your chest into the rear row" then great as long as it's accurate.
I'll decide if I want to buy it or not. I don't need a minimum spec

Thanks. I firmly believe people should be able to make their own decisions.
As long as your decisions don't infringe on my rights. And that's why we have laws.
You can make the decision to drive a big, oversized truck. But I have the right to clean air and safe climate. That's why we have EPA and CAFE standards. Because your decisions affect other people.
Your rights end where other peoples' right begin.

Yep, and that includes having the ability to purchase bigger engines for their new vehicles. If they want to pay extra (or hell, a monthly or annual tax on top of the initial increase), great, but don't just eliminate them because they are "bad". Plenty of bad things out there, singling out V8's is just wrong.
I do feel that most auto manufacturers have done some sort of cheating over the years, whether big or small. Toyota isn't the first and won't be the last.

I believe 100 percent the same thing as you, I don't want anyone to tell me what and what not to buy. I do want it to be safe though, especially for my family. In 2013 my wife got into an accident with our Sienna, and had it not met certain safety standards, my wife along with my two kids could have been severely injured, or worse...killed God forbid. I'm sure you want the same for your family

Then pay me to compromise what I want. Or at least actually address the problem you are using as a kludge to force regulations and manipulate industry. Not the greenwashing we have going on now
