Yep, my E90's fobs work this way. Knock on wood, going on 13 years and still good. Not looking forward to (eventually) replacing the battery, as the shell has to be cut open, the battery de-soldered and re-soldered to the board, then the shell glued back together.
That's a horrible design.

I think the battery is intended to be permanent, and therefore convenient. Thus far (knock wood), they have been. It's a 2011 and they still work as well as the day I bought it.
