Great review! I'm glad you finally got to try one out and had a good time.
My biggest complaint about the X is that I think it might not be the greatest for family duties. I think the Y might actually be better...
The Model X has a complete lack of places to put things in the 2nd row. There are no seat back pockets/storage. There are no pockets in the doors (because they go up so things would just fall out). There are no arm rests on any version in the 2nd row no matter which seating configuration you pick. If you get the 6 seater and have the 3rd row folded down, there's nothing stopping your items in the trunk from flying forward into the 2nd row from the trunk.
In addition, I actually found the 2nd row in the 6 seat version to feel more cramped and less spacious than the Model Y back seat. They have the 2nd row seats spaced out so far from each other, it made me feel like I was being pressed up and into the doors. I found it very uncomfortable.
I think Model Y might be better overall as the more practical and usable family car, just my opinion. Model X has too many flaws, IMO.
So how bad is insurance on a Y or X? I've heard it both ways. Crazy expensive, and not much more than anything else.
I'm sure it depends on where you live and your history, but ours went up around 20-25%. We went from a 2019 CX-5 to the 23 MYLR. I knew this going in, as I called and asked before purchasing.
Great review. I want to share a few items from my test drive. I will skip the good one, as you mentioned it already. The noise level in model X is better than in model Y, but not close to the level like the LX. The ride comfort is relative to the LX (normal mode) thanks to the air suspension, but the LX is better in noise and ride isolation. The driving dynamic is good for an SUV but less fun since it is bigger and heavier.
I don't think the X fit our need at this time. The MYP is more fun to drive and easier to get around. It is not big enough to replace my LX.

Just to provide some ideas for insurance on a Model Y & X in NYC. A couple of good friends planned to get a Model X and backed out after the insurance quote. They all have 15+ years of driving and insuring their cars, and their quotes are $4,800/yr for Staten Island, NY, and $5,600/yr for Brooklyn, NY. The Y is about 20% cheaper. Their current ICE cars are 50~60% less to insure.
I'm not sure why huge the difference in NYC. It is about 20% more in Long Island to insure EV so definitely regional.

That's a good point. Model X isn't a crazy amount larger than Y. It's 3 inches wider, 12 inches longer, but only has a 3 inch longer wheelbase.
For comparison, Rivian R1S is 6.5 inches wider than Y, 14 inches longer, and has a 7 inch longer wheelbase. All that combined with the boxy shape should mean a lot more cargo space than Y or X.
EQS SUV is only 1.5 inches wider but 15 inches longer with a 13 inch longer wheelbase, 10 more than X.

You really wanna know? Tesla Insurance was the cheapest at $1,100 for six months (or $197 a month) Full coverage, $500 deductible. It could be also my area, San Jose is experiencing a lot of smash and grab break-ins, which could be driving the cost. The Y has double pane glass all around, not cheap to replace. Also, glass roof, and the windshield costs about $2500 to replace

In hindsight, I have to agree the Model Y is far the better value. I would definitely enjoy the Model Y more as a daily driver than the X. As I mentioned, although the X has a ton of power, it does feel heavy. Also I can see those 20" tires costing a fortune. I would eventually get tired lugging that heavy thing around, and the novelty of all the power and torque would probably wear off.

Honestly, insurance varies wildly between states and companies. Insurance for my Rivian is $388/6 months with a $1K deductible and 250/500/250. I've also got an umbrella, home, and 2 other cars covered, but it really makes no sense.

Unfortunately insurance companies gouge us here, and the California dept of insurance is in their pockets. Instead of rewarding us for being long time customers with no tickets or accidents, they raise our premiums. Although illegal, they openly redline. The only way to get a lower premium is to move to a new insurance company every 6 to 12 months, so loyalty to a particular insurance company is just asking for the middle finger from them

value is subjective, but Y certainly a lot cheaper, like just over half price.

ever go to casinos? same as insurance companies. they know the odds and formulas, and they know their shareholders want a return. the rest is math. regulation is necessary just like with banking too, but as you say, politicians are bought off.

yup, i just went through this. progressive renewal quote was up 50%. i know hurricanes hurt 'em here, but yeah, no. went with geico, probably only 10% more than last time.
