If I'm not mistaken, he had Restricted stock units as well as options in which he exercised 50 percent when the stock was up, but lost out because the stock dropped and has never recovered. Is that right Allen?
Each year, I can choose restricted stock units or options in 25% increments. Both can be exercised 3 years after issuance. 3 years ago, I opted for a 50/50 split and the stock dropped making my options worthless. RSUs give me actual stock so I get that money regardless of stock price, but options have to be in the money and they are far from being in the money
This one is for you @jrmckinley My company was doing some sort of Superbowl party, and me and a coworker got this urge to ditch the party and test drive a Model S. So we headed over to Tesla Fremont and grabbed a Silver Model S:
It's a pretty amazing car. Very comfortable and quiet, and with the suspension put in the softest mode, it ate up all the bad roads. Even with the 21" tires, it was super quiet. And yes, this thing is fast. The highlight of the whole test drive was handing a Merceds AMG his ***. Not the new four banger, the V8 version. We were heading down Fremont blvd near Dixon Landing, and he tried to take us at the light, but I smoked him so bad he might as well have been standing still. He tried a second attempt where I stopped at the next light and he had momentum from the last race, he tried to time it so he could blow right past me while I was still stopped at the light, but no cigar, I blew his doors off. I could hear his V8 screaming becoming a distant roar. My coworker said this was the highlight of our test drive
The yoke. I decided I wanted to see what the yoke was like, and mostly it was fine, but not ideal in turns. I could live with the yoke, but if I ever were to buy a Model S, it would be with the regular, round steering wheel. Also, the turn signals are hepatic feedback instead of the click feeling of the new Model 3, and not my preference, but like the yoke, I could get to used to it.
All in all, the Model S to me is timeless, although it's built on a 13 year old platform. That said, the updates they have made are completely welcome

thanks for the assist.

i thought you were talking about tesla stock, not your employer's stock, which is why i didn't understand. granted i'd never heard of rsu's before either so that didn't help.

RSU's are restricted stock given to employees as part of their compensation that have vesting periods, which can be one or two years where you can't sell them. They are counted as income, and taxes are due when they vest. Unlike options where you have the option to buy stocks at a lower set price.
Some more details on the Model S. After driving the Model 3 for about two months, the Model S felt really heavy.... that is until you go down on the throttle. In 'Standard' driving mode, it has an almost luxury car feel. Throttle response is still instant, but very linear, and not head snapping. Even in 'Insane' model, you feel it in your head and stomach, but there was no head snapping.
This was a Demo model that had a little over a thousand miles on it, and not one rattle. My coworker and I went over the entire car, and we couldn't find any quality related issues at all. No gaps, no misaligned panels, or lose trim. It looks like Tesla has really stepped up.
I see why @patgilm loves his S, even with all the issues he's experienced with it. I could definitely live with this car as my daily. And being just under $80k before tax and license, (with lifetime free supercharging), it's not cheap, but as a luxury/sports sedan it does seem like a bargain

I put my car up for sale and got a somewhat fair offer for it so it may be gone next week pending inspection. I have to suck it up and pay $14k to get out of it but I will likely get a new one to replace it. If it’s gone I will have to decide to get black or get another white one.

I think you will be happy with the improvements they made for the 2025 models. And yes, you should consider silver as well

I forgot about the new lunar silver. I’m not much of a silver car person but from pictures it definitely looks good so will have to check it out. I would like red since I’ve never had a red car but my wife won’t go for it. She just doesn’t care for red cars.

My wife absolutely hates Black, yet I've had four black cars since 2018. I promise you, it wasn't to spite her

i would be quite attracted to a model s IF it had the variable steering / rear steer from the CT. i think that would transform the car.
oh and now it needs light bars and slender headlights.

You are correct, it would than make the case for buying one with the yoke. That said, I'm amazed how well this car handles. It's big and heavy. Without googling, I'm sure it's way bigger than my Y. And it's pretty efficient, we left the Tesla space at 65 percent, and I bought it back 30 minutes later with 62 percent. And I was in Insane mode and hammering it. Even humiliated an AMG owner, twice who didn't look to happy 🤣. But it could also be that giant 100 kWh battery
