Default Edzilla’s ‘99 Build

Hello everyone,

After about six years, I am back on the forum. I was on here back in 2013 when I built my IS250.



I recently purchased a 1999 LS400 in the silver jade metallic colorway. I originally wanted a black or silver one but clean LS400s are hard to come by here in the Midwest. I rarely see this colorway around and it’s actually starting to grow on me.



I plan on doing a budget build as it is my daily driver and I do park on the street so I don’t want my car to be on bricks.

After some research and looking at reviews, I decided to go with Truhart Street Plus coilovers. It took awhile to install due to complications such as seized bolts from the salt here in the Midwest.



After a few hours, my buddy and I finally got the fronts on and will finish up the rears later as the sun was setting. I don’t plan on going extremely low as the roads here are **** and there are hella pot holes.

Got the rears lowered and evened out the height all around until I get the fenders rolled and put the wheels on.

Update:
Got the fenders rolled on all four corners.
Mounted the tires.
Lowered the car a bit more with the 19s.

Wheels/tires:

Aodhan AH03
Front 19x9.5 + 22 235/35/19
Rear 19x11 + 22 255/35/19

Camber: natural
Spacers weren’t needed to clear front brakes.
Rubbing: No.

It's been a while, but I still own the car. I've recently had the power steering pump, check engine/VSC, and non-working speedometer symptoms. I ran the codes and it came out to 9 codes in total.

Currently at 218,xxx miles

Error Codes:
P0110 - Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit
P0125 - Insufficient Coolant Temp for Closed Loop Fuel Control
P1351 - Variable Valve Timing / CMP Sensor Range / Performance
P1354 - Variable Valve Timing System Fault
P0300 - Random Misfire Detected
P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0306 - Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected
P0308 - Cylinder 8 Misfire Detected
P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

** As far as the power steering pump goes, I've had a local shop fix the issue two times now but it yet keeps on coming back. Therefore, I ordered a new OEM power steering pump, reservoir holes, high-pressure holes, seals, and DexronIII fluid. **

Parts I've ordered are listed below which I and a friend will be installing this weekend:
  • New headlight/corner lights
  • New Spark Plugs
  • New Valve Cover Gasket
  • Oil change with Lexus Filter and Castrol GTX oil
  • New Power Steering Pump with the reservoir/high-pressure holes and Lexus 50/50 coolant
  • New Cabin Air Filter
  • New Hood Shocks
  • New Oil Control Valve
  • New Oil Control Valve Filter
  • New VVT solenoids
  • New upper idler pulley
  • New main drive belt and tension belt
  • New water pump and timing belt
  • New MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor)
  • New ECT Sensor (Coolant Temperature Sensor)
  • New 4 slotted/drilled brake rotors and ceramic pads
  • New Cooling radiator fan switch
  • New O2 Sensor
  • New TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)
  • Transmission Flush
  • Used Cluster from Junk Yard
  • Cleaning Fuel Injectors

I will be posting pictures once we get the car ready.

glad you're still around and kickin! lots of maintenance to do but that's important to keep the car running well. best of luck sir and pls keep us updated!

usually for the misfires i would start with just changing the plugs (as i see you will be doing)!

Thank you! I figured it would be the plugs, but I figured since it's at 218, xxx miles, I'd go ahead and just do all the maintenance. I will definitely keep everyone posted.

It's been almost two weeks now, but we were taking our time. Everything has been done maintenance-wise. Currently cutting out wood to create a base for the trunk.


Maintenance that was completed:
  • - Brand new headlights
  • - Brand new corner lights
  • - Brand new spark plugs (8)
  • - Brand new valve cover gasket
  • - Brand new cabin air filter
  • - New oil change with Castrol GTX high mileage full synthetic oil with OEM Toyota filter (every 3,000 miles)
  • - Brand new oil control valve
  • - Brand new oil control valve filter
  • - Brand new hood shocks
  • - Brand new power steering pump
  • - Brand new VVT solenoids (2)
  • - Brand new upper idler pulley
  • - Brand new main drive belt
  • - Brand new tension belt
  • - Brand new tensioner for timing belt
  • - Brand new MAF (mass air flow sensor)
  • - Brand new ECT (coolant temperature sensor)
  • - Brand new slotted and drilled brake rotors with ceramic pads (4)
  • - Brand new water pump and timing belt
  • - Brand new cooling radiator fan switch
  • - Brand new O2 Sensor
  • - Brand new throttle body position
  • - Transmission Flush
  • - Used gauge cluster (not installed)





Fluids.

More fluids.

Oil change.

Removing everything.

New belts, tensioners, etc.


New rotors and pads.

No more lights.



The car feels so much better and is ready to go for several more hundred thousand miles! The leaking power steering fluid made it a nightmare in the engine bay. We degreased everything while the motor was apart and cleaned everything up.

great progress! the PS fluid made things very messy indeed but glad she is purring like a kitten once again. glad you also changed out the coolant to toyota for the longevity of the new water pump.

i see you have new wheels too? why are you changing the gauge cluster?

I do not think he was changing the gauge cluster, he was just showing it has no check engine lights.

Default Plz help.

Plz help. Kind of a shot in the dark here but it’d be AWSOME for any type of response. I have a 1999 Ls400 which has treated me great. 178,000 and in good condition but had an check engine light that came from a vacuum leak from the air in take manifold, I replaced that cleared the light and got my emissions done. Passed.

issues occurring: (same day as I passed emissions)

On my way to the gym (5 miles away) 1-1/2 miles in I started to sputter. Quickly turned around and drove very carefully back home. The car would gallop & quickly die when stopped at red lights.
(no check engine light)

attempt 1 : (vent hose was trashed& PCV valve was covered in oil)ventilation hose & PCV valve replacement. Idled good but did the same thing (sputtering, low idle and die off) 5 miles after driving.

attempt 2 : MAF sensor replacement, same issues.

attempt 3 : cleaned throttle body and the little holes atop the throttle body. After this I got High idle to low idle to die off after a few minutes of “warming up”. after I tired to start it back up (still a strong turn over) & it demands gas to stay on. Quickly dies.


(I am currently in my car after a successful start up & been idling at 800 for about 10 min now. Taking a drive & updating)

I’m sorry for the resurgent of this thread

any reply on a theory of what could be causing this would be amazing.


(after driving I got the sputters back & died off while turning into my neighborhood. Got a headlight level light after)
