Bdub215: NA-T, R154 + More! 56K Stay away
So i'm going to copy my build thread from SupraForums dating back to 2014 (as i dont have anything here) and try to keep both updated
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Background i got this car in december 2013, joined SF in november 2013.
Post date 10/23/2014
i'll start from scratch since hardly anyone here knows who i am...
My name is Brent. Shortly after i joined this forum i picked up this 1992 SC300 5 Speed with 104K on the clock. Mint Paint. Clean engine and 1 owner previously. Also this car was "Parked" for the last 10 years with mileage averaging 1K a year.
I put on a set of wheels from my previous car which fit nicely, Only they weren't wide enough and the car slid alot. i've recently sold them to get something else. Also swapped to TT Suspension for a nice drop and maintain good ride quality.
somewhere in there i bought axle backs for the car (Top Speed Pro-1) That and the HIC Visor too
I had a wise front lip but i sold it. someone wanted it more then i did...
I recently did the BFI out of self amusement and Upgraded my front brakes to cross drilled and slotted.
Now that thats over, My next goal would be to turbo my car. It'd be my first car that I'd have done such a task to. I'm still not sure on the EMS front on what to use but I'm going to start to accumulate parts very soon and hope to have this task done early next year. Probably the reason i dont post much is the wealth of knowledge on this forum takes time to read, so its time i put it to use and make my car competitive. Someone will always be faster then me, but i dont like being beat at stop light digs by a V6 Camry

So I've started the parts gathering. Picked up this CX racing manifold which I plan to strengthen before it even has a turbo placed on it.
This is the top speed pro 1 manifold for the GTE. I want to get support mounts welded up like this:
I work at a performance shop so I should be able to get this done.
Next order of business is a clutch which I've got picked out. Just need to order it from THMotorsports. Black Friday deals FTW.

Small update: been doing some shopping. Picked up a USDM Supra GTE ECU for my engine management for when i get boost. It however is an auto ECU but i don't think that should cause an issue. I've ran my other cars on auto ECU's before and had no issues.
Picked up a DS62 igniter from a junkyard from a Avalon.
I have a clutch on the way. Get photos of that when it gets here.
post date 12/15/14
And this arrived today
Parts list is growing by the day.
Post date 3/22/15
Guess I haven't this in awhile so I'll bring folks up to speed. Long winter meant doing long amounts of research. I think I got everything picked out, just need to buy stuff now.
I sold the USDM ECU and picked up a JDM 6 speed ECU because it'll be easier to get the car running with that. Also sold the CX manifold because my turbo choice wouldn't be the best with the stock side facing setup. To my transition for these changes, it hurt to do this (a little) but I traded my clutch for a Treadstone manifold and a Downpipe mated for a S366 turbo to fit in an SC300. You can see where this is going now..... Going to pick up the turbo from Mikes turbo INC on my next pay and start really making progress.
Photos to come soon.

(3/29/15)
Started today with alot of money:
Found a set of TT wheels a little rough around the edges but i'm far from picky. Few phone calls, lots of facebook and a little bit of luck got me these. I've Already thanked all connected to this deal.
In the process of fitting the wheels, i tried my OEM 15" center cap and it was slightly to small. It just so happens i have another set of OEM wheels and Center caps from the 95 MY (my dads car). Tried that cap for ****s and giggles. It actually fit perfectly.
So Thats where i'm at right now. Tires are a tad noisy but they're used so i'm not complaining. Couple burnouts at cruise week in OCMD in a month and a half and they'll be gone.
10/26/15
I haven't posted anything here since the end of March so I guess I can do all little teaser and completely update the thread tomorrow
Outside still looks mostly the same
But it's the smaller details that catch attention
Oh I have a factory wing now
Stay tuned. A lot has happened in 6 months.

So What have i been doing in the past 6 months?
Well as mentioned before, Tax season was good to me this year, I bought the TT wheels, and i managed to pick up a Borg Warner S366, and a CX Racing intercooler Kit
Intercooler should fit nice but the piping will probably need to be modified to suit the turbo as this is made to fit the Stock MAF and i'm not using any of that.
JDM 6 speed ecu and DS62
Cruise week came and went and my already bad rears had their fun. I couldnt hook in the rain and was going sideways without even trying. It was getting dangerous ... Chords were showing on the inner edges after i was done.
These fixed that problem
Set of 4 in stock TT sizing ran me like 250 bucks.
A little while later my next major annoyance got fixed. The sloppy shifter that the W58's get after they age when the bushing wear out really starting bothering me. So i started reading up on it and came across the BillyM Shiftgasm and gave it a shot. As of this writing i havent done the socket repair just the new Seat and new bushing but what a difference it made. This was my "shifter seat"
Now its the start of summer:
I begin to hear this noise on start up and i dont have a clue what it is.... at this point its only on cold start. few weeks later and its getting worse. every start up, and every time i rev the engine. figure its the belt tensioner. Replace, not fixed but its good to have a new one. One morning i record my engine as i rev it, i see the crank pulley moving in and out, and i'm like, THATS NOT GOOD...
My friend points me in the direction of a cheap aftermarket OEM replacement from ebay and a few days later, my car is back on the road
This decision will come back to bite me in the ***...
Its mid summer now and i get a message from a friend of mine. I hear your looking for a OEM wing. I have one in your color with a trunk attached to it. come get it.
Went to delaware to shove a Trunk INSIDE my car (fit somehow) and i also picked up a butterfly cupholder.
The donor car
and my car
Things quieted down, for a bit. Few weeks later, Another phone call offering a deal so good, I had cash ready. Friend tried fitting LS400 brakes on a MR2 and said they weren't going to work the way he planned, so he asked if i wanted them.
Note: I'm not a fan of the LS400 brakes because i cant run my winter setup but they do work really good on the not so great pads and rotors that came with the calipers.
A Lil Paint (Chevy Orange)
Decided to get focused on my Turbo setup again.
Picked up Oside Tiger 440CC injectors (no photo)
Tial MV-R wastegate
Days later some bad **** went down.
did a nice 1-2 pull...... i heard something pop... Motor was still running, Trans still shifted... pulled over opened the hood
snapped another crank pulley.....
towed home
Bull**** no one, i called the company i got this from, got one overnighted to me, and installed it.... Never pushed my car again. Same time i installed those LS400 brakes. Perfect time to do it. these came off. they only let me down once and that was after 6 hard stops on the street doing some "activities". HIGHLY recommend Brakemotive Kits.
This pulley has now been replaced my a Fluidampr Crank pulley So now i can push my car if i want to
on a side note
Since last winter My windshield has been making weird noises in the cold.
Mid july it started leaking.... badly...
got that fixed
Thats pretty much it. Oh I've sold My ES300 5 speed (le sigh).
today
Still Original paint, Original headlights and high beams, and still looks amazing. best money i've spent on a car!

Update for Christmas Eve and merry Xmas to all 👍🏾
Guess I'll start with the bad news
I've had my license for 7 years, lived in Philly for 24 and not once have I been in a accident. Well someone's Xmas gift to me was this huge dent in the side of my car.
I was sitting at a light and a little old lady backed into me. 700 dollars to fix....
While normally I wouldn't care, I'd just be happy to have my car fixed, my clean carfax is now gone, and all original paint is soon to be gone as well. That is what kills me the most. It sucks.
So to take my mind of the dent, this weekend I'm pulling my trans and putting in my clutch. Trans is actually out as of this writing and carnage photos:
5/30/16
Been a quiet 2016. quiet and costly......
Out in the snow 22+ inches. Snow tires work very well. An LSD would be even better.
picked up an Ultra Racing tower brace for the MK4 supra (fits great)
Tax season allowed me to spend on some suspenson parts that i wanted to get. and apparently needed.
out with the old
In with the new
Handling and stability was much improved. like its silly how hard you can push the car.
life got quiet again. **** it rained every other day. a friend let me try a nice set of SSR wheels around april's Car's & Coffee. Even though they came off a MK4, I couldnt clear the rears without a fair amount of work in the rear of the car.
But they looked soooooo good. so much for trying to step into the big leagues :\
Same day this happened, I dyno'ed my car. I didnt know what to expect but ive seen a few SC's throw down numbers in the low 170 range. two pulls later and i'm slightly confused. A BFI w/ K&N filter, axleback, and Fluidampr pulley car made this?
Dyno Videos
My parts erhm dads car
here's where it gets bad. cruise week 2016
supra meet @ roses
saturday night in the rain, got some bad wheel hop in second in the rain and as we all know wheel hop breaks ****. broke trans 155 miles from home (ouch)
pulled the case apart and these fell out. dont know if the detent ***** and springs caused the failure but i know with most w58 failures, no gears except 4th. and i drove it 30 blocks on 4th.
So as of this writing, car sits on jack stands, new trans will be here 5/31 and im going to plan for a CD009 swap soon as my car is driveable.

So i finally did it. Finally did the deed and got my turbo in over Labor Day weekend. Not without its hiccups.
When you gather parts you've been collecting for two years in a pile, you start to realize how much money you've spent.
Oside tiger 440CC injectors installed.
Stock injectors out. And even with a new filter on, that fuel came out pretty dark in the rail ??
Test fit the S366 and Treadstone manifold. Probably as close a fit as you want in this car.
It was all going so smooth until the intercooler needed to be fitted.
CX racing "bolt on" intercooler kit for this car isn't so bolt on. The bracket for the passenger side of the car was too long and it had to be modified to fit. Not to mention, CX drills a hole in the car for the piping (something I didn't notice before hand). Spent a few hours getting the intercooler to a spot where I could get some movement in it, bolted it in, and kept moving quite displeased.
And all back together
At this point, had to focus removing the oil pan to weld on the drain flange and actually reseal my leaking pan. What a ****ing task this was. As all the threads on here have stated, drop the frame 4-6 inches and slide it out. There is no other way to get it out. I just didn't think it would take hours of fighting to get it out but at this point, it's like 1AM when it does come out and myself and my friend who was helping me with the project were burned out. Welded on the drain flange, resealed the pan and put the bottom of the car back together and called it a night.
Day 2
It was pretty much spent doing the TT ECU mod and swapping the union bolts and running the feed line. The TT ECU mod is very straight forward. Follow the directions and you can't go wrong. Actually I thought none of it made sense until I had a wiring diagram in front of me and it became clear as day.
Out is the 92 Cali ECU. In is the JDM 6 speed GTE computer.
And after a hour, filling with fresh oil and new filter and priming the motor/turbo, swing the key and fires right up. Albeit with a misfire (found out later two injector clips came out). However during the initial start after about a minute, I noticed a huge puddle of oil under my car. Not good. Turns out when I ordered the fitting for the IS300 Union bolt, I got sent the wrong one. The line bolted on but was loose. Called it quits at that point. Got the car and all my **** loaded up on my friends trailer and got me home.
This was how it looked on day two
Ordered another fitting from McMaster at 12am the Tuesday after Labor Day weekend. Got it same day. Installed fitting and voila leak gone. Been putting some miles on it since and getting the ECU happy with just running at atmospheric pressure as I'm still working on the IC piping as of this writing. But it drives easy. Starts on the first shot. It needs plugs and I have a set of one step colder plugs to use but I'm going to wait to install those.
I'll post some videos shortly. If you search my name on YouTube, I believe I have posted one already. I will be posting more.

Ok so this thread has been quiet for awhile. but it hasnt been bad. got about 10K on the turbo setup and its been great. got the kinks out of it and havent had to deal with many issues.
First thing's first: bought a MBC.
and because i've broken one W58 at stock power, you shell out cash for an upgrade: and this is built as well
Now a tripod trans doesnt work in my car. solution: the early soarer r154 parts to make a conversion.
and onto the issues:
Couplers lol
melted some and tore some. no big deal.
tried cleaning up some of the vaccum lines and changed my air filter
had a extremely loud whistling sound that i couldnt exactly pinpoint. turns out it was a internal vaccum leak through my EGR. EGR delete plates fixed that.
Meanwhile this whole time i'd been running open downpipe. Sounds great but omg it got old and i'm sure i pissed my neighbors off lol
and yes i even went to the track and made about 10-15 passes (on a w58 i know!). didnt push it that hard and was still having coupler issues and basically ran without boost for most of the runs. a couple of the runs like in the video i was at 10PSI
So after a few months i got my exhaust finished and could finally hear that glorious sound of the S366.
i realized soon after this that my car was making a huge knocking noise from the rear of the car under acceleration. Thought it was the diff as there was large metal shards on the drain plug when i checked, turned out to be a wheel bearing. crisis averted.
Cold Start like a champ
Plans for this year:
change exhaust
coilpacks
change o2 sensor to heated
R154 install
see how much boost i can run on stock compression, ecu, and internals
2/24/17
Got my new mufflers today. Something I've never seen on a SC but have on VERY few supras but it was the bigger version. These are Aeroturbine 3040i's. 3 inch inlet with a 4inch tip. Designed for turbo applications, there's this cool little valve in the muffler that separates the exhaust exiting the muffler ( low and hi speed) and recombines them at the end. This muffler produces a wonderful sound and I can't wait to install it on my SC.
3/3/17
Finally got an appointment to get the mufflers installed. I'm once again satisfied by the purchase of Aeroturbine mufflers. A unique and very raw sound and the mufflers have a great look.
How does it feel after? Well if I haven't mentioned, I was running a 3.5" Downpipe into a 3" midpipe into the stock 3rd section (the piece behind the second cat that splits into the duals before the mufflers). That stock 3rd section has two resonators in it and the piping diameter is hardly even up to the task of flowing the air this turbo can push.
I will say that as i left the exhaust shop I went in on 9 psi.
I left on 12 with zero changes to my boost controller.
In fact I only noticed when I did a pull getting onto the highway like oh **** I'm over my limit..... But I've left the controller alone still at 12 psi for today and nothing bad has happened.... Yet. I'm going to turn it back down but if I need it for a race or something, it's there.
And here is that pull I did. Just note, I can get this car to launch pretty well. Apparently today with the new exhaust, different story.
5/27/17
Update time:
Although this wont surprise anyone here: W58's dont like boost. Throwing 13lbs at mine didnt break it but it developed a rattle in all gears except 4th. figured it was a countershaft issue but continued to drive on it. drained the fluid a few times to see metal in the fluid but no metal chunks. but with the trans still working, I got to rushing to get my R154 swap started.
If you've gotten this far, you'll remember i've got a Built tripod R154 collecting dust in my basement. Also have an Original Soarer shift housing and select rod collecting dust as well. time to get to work on those.
I got to removing the Triopd setup from the R154 and put that up for sale. Sold it same night. who would've thought? lol
Installed the internal shifted Soarer housing and did prelim measurements
Now doing this swap was pretty straight forward. As you can see, its not far off to begin with. So no modifications to the transmission had to be made.
What i did was wound up cutting a piece of the front of the shift housing off and remaking that to fit the Tripod R154 footprint sealing the gap i had in the front and allowing me to bolt it down properly. i had to dremel out the center holes to make those work.
Also Came to find out i needed 2 small washers on the back of the housing (one each side) as when i put the shifter in place, the bushing would get stuck. i realized after looking at the original gasket that was on here that this was required and is now done. Sealed the housing up with FIPG and ready to roll
it works
Ok Trans done now what right?
Thats covered too (and i dont know where the photos are for everything. will add when i find them)
Bought a Comp Clutch lightweight flywheel Months ago just been sitting on that for a rainy day. Also had a friend part out a MK3 turbo so i got all required materials from that. a good (albeit used) ACT clutch, shift fork, driveshaft, slave cylinder w/ line (all of that was 200 bucks)
so by the time the trans was done, it was ready to go in the car.
Came home a Thursday, Pulled the car in the garage and setup everything. drained the fluid and Pulled the W58. Found a seized pilot bearing (explains my noise) and the trans had tons of input shaft play. still found a buyer for it and off loaded that thing.
Spec Clutch after 30-40K miles and 13K under boost
R154 install went smoothly. only two issues:
the driveshaft was scraping against that cone on the end of the trans. took that off.
speedo was off. fix for that was buying the right speedometer gear. from a t100. works perfect now.

Got my new mufflers today. Something I've never seen on a SC but have on VERY few supras but it was the bigger version. These are Aeroturbine 3040i's. 3 inch inlet with a 4inch tip. Designed for turbo applications, there's this cool little valve in the muffler that separates the exhaust exiting the muffler ( low and hi speed) and recombines them at the end. This muffler produces a wonderful sound and I can't wait to install it on my SC.

Sold it same night. who would've thought? lol
