Default 1998 es300 tranny advice

Hello every one. I am in the process of buying my grandfathers 1998 lexus es300. it was bought in Arizona and driven here to kansas city missouri. The lexus is v6 automatic transmission. Last month the car would not go into gear. My grandfather thought he had a transmission fluid leak because when he checked the dip stick it was dry. But i looked under the car and i didnt see any leaks. The car as well as the ground was dry. But my grandfather added 3 quarts of transmission fluid anyway. We started the car and it went into gear. We drove it about 30 miles and i checked the leval. The fluid looked dark and had the bad smell and when i wiped the stick, there was black dirt on the towel. I could tell something was burnt. Two days later the car lost all the gears except reverse. My question is, is the tranny totaled? If it is is there something online that would show me how to pull the old and put a new transmission in it? Any advise would be helpful. Like my user name says Im dum2lexus. thank you
