Has nothing to do with the number code, there are just alot of people breaking them and some of them aren't even turbo, they could be similar internally but I would guess they changed something for the worse (like skinnier rods on the 2jzge vvti). I don't hear too many w58's breaking on stock power and the IS does not make that much more power.
Also look how they went back to the older type of shifter that looks like the older w58's and r154's before they got the remote shifter cage that on all of toyota's "nice" transmissions. I take it as a sign of they just slapped something in there that would work, and that is was not "over-built", but this is just my opinion the only facts are that people are breaking them often.

I have been turbo since June 2010 and running my factory W55 with an ACT Sprung 6 Puck with Xtreme Pressure Plate and have had 0 issues with it. I have been running low boost on it and making 300-325 whp on it at these levels. I have done some spirited driving on it and have around 12000 miles on this setup since I turboed the car. I think alot of the IS300 guys that have destroyed the W55 either had high mileage and/or thought they were Joe Dirt and put a beating on them.
The W55 has been known to handle ~350 whp whereas the W58 has been known to handle 350-400. Internally the only diffences between the two are the gears.
I think you could have gotten the W55 up and running with your setup which could have bought you time to upgrade to an R154/V160.

thanks bro he was saying it was a 55 because it came out of an is my mechanic telling me its a 58 he been around with these motors and trans so i think im going with the person that seen it first hand....but yea i agree with you as long as i don't do dig and launch hard in high boost it should hold and yea im putting it in for now cause when my r154 goes in its going in with a twin disk setup so i dont mess up my crank with my high hp goal.....

Your mechanic is incorrect, the pictures you posted on the 1st page are of a W55 from an IS. You can also pull the VIN off of the plate on the side of the W55 and do a VIN search online. No W58 came with that lever housing. The SC300 W58 had a standard type housing like most an the MKIV W58 came with the tripod.

Tranny
Let me just say sell the w58 or w55 what ever you have and get a r154 period. You will be wasting your money doing anything else. Period. Read about it and take people's word. I personally have a 1.5 jzgte single 6262 person on stock tune turning a good 400 to the wheels. Blah blah blah right. Well the car was tuned around 17 psi putting about 485 whp. Tore up a nice w58 slung the gears right out. Got swapped another w58 what was he thinking. And sold the car to me I can't complain out side the fact I believe a stag 2 clutch. Lol well slipping cant hold the stock power I'm running. So I am dropping a r154 in my car now if that doesn't do the trick ill be really pissed but here's the thing. I know for a fact if your running a stock NA it might be a ok tranny. Put some power to it and hope it does slip cause if it grabs kiss that tranny good bye. Do it right the first time.
