i drove about 200 miles with the new clutch, all fine, the car runs great! In the meantime i found finally a pair of Recaro Style Trendline seats inthe netherlands for standard rails for my SC. At first, i cleaned the seats and fixed the mechanic. This week i handed over the seats to the upholsterer to cover it with leather. i choosed original almond beige from mercedes. the looks 95% like the oem leather.
I bought original Recaro Japan seat brackets with sliders for the supra/SC chassis. Great quality parts. not cheap, but best all-in-one solution.
this is the best upgrade this year for my car i can´t wait to install the seats
Soooo good! Awesome pick up on the seats. Can't wait to see them re-upholstered and mounted. I'd LOVE to do something like that with my car at some point.
I think, i have the seats back in 2-3 weeks. the upholsterer have a lot to do in his shop. we bought 8,5m² of fine leather. this should be enough for the 2 recaro seats and the back seat.Better to re-leather all the seats than to see a color difference.
the seats are re-upholstered, but terrible, next wednesday, the seats going back to the shop. i´m not happy with the result. looks like a soft cover
This week, my SC was by a detailer close to my home village. washing, cleaning, 4-step polish with wax finish. engine room, door entrys, interieur cleaned, headlight and backlights sealed.
3 weeks ago, it was a japan car meeting in austria, i was the one and only SC on the place
i bought from XAT Racing steel flywheel with 20lbs. now i have the lightflywheel with 11lbs. this is nice for track and fast shifting, but too light for normal driving and traffic jams. After some hours on the lathe, the flywheel have now 16,5 lbs. More is not possible and holes drill is not a good idea in the cast steel. my goal was under 15,5lbs, but with this flywheel not possible. i had at first a 20lbs and the UZ feels with this sluggish. i will test it in the winter with a heavy duty pressure plate from act instead the stage 5 plate from Spec. i hope this is the middle way between lfw and "standard".
The seats are back from the upholsterer. The quality is ok, not perfect, i will try it to install. The side covers need a little modification with bolts to hold on the bracket.
Flywheels are so tough - I personally don't like driving a super light flywheel around town either and I love your approach of finding a good middle ground!
I feel you on the seats... I love the idea, LOVE the color and the seat style, but I see why you're just a hair disappointed in the final product. Regardless, I think they'll feel awesome and look great in there.
I don't say this often - but your car is so well thought out and complete. I'd trade you cars in a heartbeat (I love the thought of a manual V8 SC that's done so well). Keep enjoying this bad boy!
I think it may be the all one tone of the final leather upholstery that may be giving you that feeling. However I'll bet they still feel great to sit in with a much better seating position and with side bolstering! I hope they fit well with those vintage A80 Recaro rails.
Going from 22lbs to 16.5lbs on your new flywheel I think you will still be much happier. The SC chassis is heavy and that splitting of the difference should work out well. 11lbs is definitely much too light. I had a Prelude many years ago (where the BB6 in my user name comes from) and its stock flywheel was 22lbs. I installed a 13.5lb aftermarket flywheel in it and it was good for revving in high performance driving as you say... but not so great in all everyday driving situations. In Los Angeles there are many mountain roads and hills. Anything lighter than 13.5lbs would have been very hard to get along with on those roads in the 2.2L Honda with its 156 ft-lbs.
The SC300 5-speed stock flywheel is, I think, something like 22lbs stock. Given the weight of the car I didn't want a lightweight flywheel in there. The torque is much higher than in my old Honda even naturally aspirated and at lower revs. Those things made driving on the hilly CA the hilly roads easier. With the even higher torque your 1UZ has with yet two more cylinders I do think going to 16.5lbs will probably feel quite good as a balance between quicker than stock revs and momentarily saved inertia.
Tom, you're dialing in that SC400 so well a bit at a time and overall it's getting perfected in a really impressive way! I hope you got many interested people wishing to learn about the SC/Soarer at that car meet
The Recaro rails are new from Japan, you can order it on RHDJapan or Nengun. The are only in Japan to buy.
The 11lbs is too light. ideal for a track car, but not for the street. I hope i have maybe on the the weekend free time to install the seats. here in europe, the weather is now nice and warm, but the next weeks, the autumn starts and without a closed garage is this not funny
This is a great SC build thread. Back years ago I owned a 1997 SC400 then a 1999 SC400. I ran a Zex Nitrous kit on both. They were both such great cars to drive.
The seats look nice. Sometimes with Leather like that, if you take a Heat gun and carefully go over the wrinkles with it they will disappear and the leather will tighten up. There are some You Tube vids that show how to do it and the results with leather car seats. Keep up the good work!
Just a thought. Your gold wheels may blend even better with the car if you had the gold emblems instead of the silver. Even if they didn't come w the car you have surpassed the gold status
btw; I was born in Bavaria, close to the border. I know where your precise attention to detail comes from.
