sanding down headlights
I'd use 1500, and not go any harsher than 1200, otherwise it's difficult compounding out the micro scratching.
I can always get them looking good with 1500 followed by a compound and polish. If it's only slight dulling, you're better served to use PlastX or another plastic polish such as Novus sells.
Just like paint, use the least aggressive method you can get results by.

It's tough to say without seeing what you're trying to clean up but generally like G'man says start with something less aggressive before going to something more aggressive. I use 2000 or 2500 alot on my lenses or aluminum wheels, something that polishes out nicely and won't get me in much trouble.
Is there a DIY thread cause I'm not sure how to do it.
Well, they're are a few good ones all over the Web, but here's one I wrote many years ago for a couple other car sites, this one is linked to FordvsChevy ( where I also moderate-though it's dead there), but it's the same post .

Use the same general principles applied to paint, to do your headlamps. It's long, but the basic points are all in there and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Good luck!
