This valve uses vacuum from the intake manifold to draw the fumes from the crankcase.
Symptoms of a faulty PCV valve are poor idle and excessive pressure in the crankcase.
You may experience excessive Oil Leakage if the valve and breather element become clogged, the crankcase is no longer vented to the atmosphere. This causes the crankcase pressure to increase and results in oil leakage at gasket surfaces.
Great preventative maintenance that only costs a few bucks and minutes to change...
As a rule of thumb I change mine whenever I change the air filter...
My PCV valve location differs slightly from what Fern has posted. I have a 2001 RX AWD. I have circled my PCV valve location. Mine is an all metal part with a threaded end on it. After my discussions with toyo, who suggested in the first place to replace the PCV valve, I just wanted to share with my fellow RX'ers that this is another PCV valve besides the rubber/plastic one.
Wow, mine is not the screw in type. Mine is also a 2001. My 2004 4runner is however the screw in type. That must be one of those in the production change changes. MAkes me wonder why they changed it to a diff type. Like I have said all along, the PCV valve is VERY important to the way the engine expels oil vapors, and we all know this engine has got some issues in regards to that. Just my thoughts.
