How-To Tuesday: Picking the Right Paint Shop

If you’re rocking an older model Lexus, there’s one sure-fire way to make it at least look like new again: a shiny paint job. But how do you go about finding the right shop?

Since painting your own Lexus isn’t recommended, this week’s How-To Tuesday article walks you through the four-step process of picking the right paint shop for the job. You might be surprised by how many factors go into such a decision.

The biggest question mark is how much money are you planning on spending? As with most things, you generally get what you pay for. But while a factory-quality paint job can run you upwards of $20K, you don’t necessarily have to drop that much cash to get quality work done. That said, you should probably spend what you can, as the results will show, not just in attractiveness, but in protection for your Lexus as well.

So step one is to set a budget, either a low-cost paint job between $250 and $2,500, a middle-cost paint job between $2,500 and $7,000, or a high-end affair upwards of $20k, as previously noted. Keep in mind, this estimate should also include any body work that needs to be done, as a perfect paint job won’t occur without it.

Now it’s time to pick your shop. Google, Yelp, and the Club Lexus forums will be your trusted resources here. Once you’ve narrowed down a few, go get yourself at least three quotes. Any shop that gives you a firm quote over the phone is probably not one you want to deal with, as a professional needs to see what he or she is dealing with.

After you’ve got your quotes, it’s time to go home and make a decision. Hopefully today’s How-To article will help make that choice a little easier.
