Lexus’ New Compact Luxury Crossover Is a Compelling Curiosity

These days, it seems that you can’t turn around without seeing a compact crossover. Love them or hate them, they combine a tall seating position and loads of space with a more nimble chassis and better fuel economy than their mid-size or full-size brethren. To an SUV-obsessed populace, it’s a way to have your cake and eat it too.

Luxury brands are sure to capitalize on popular segments, and as a result there is now a very crowded field of compact luxury crossovers. Lexus has decided to enter the fray with its NX 200t, and it’s a compelling choice when compared to its rivals.

NX 200t Crossover: Simply 'Adequate'?

The comparatively long hood is no stranger to the segment. On the new rides, it’s accentuated by bold front end styling that’s becoming standard across Lexus’ lineup. The sides feature similarly polarizing styling. Do the mix of curved and sharp edges offer a perfect blend of sportiness and rugged capability? Or do they just look busy and misguided? It’s entirely up to you.

Step inside, though, and the luxurious interior, featuring high-quality materials and excellent build quality that’s standard across the Lexus lineup, will make you forget about the exterior in a hurry.

Auto industry journalist Mike Parris recently reviewed the NX 200t for Washington’s Top News. Reading between the lines of his review, if one word could describe the NX 200t’s driving dynamics, it’s “adequate.” Handling is definitely a strong suit, according to Parris, to the slight detriment of ride quality. He states that the 235-horsepower turbo four provides decent acceleration, despite noticeable turbo lag, and the automatic transmission is responsive and shifts quickly when necessary.

All in all, this crossover will more than likely not blow you away with any one particular attribute. However, as a complete package, it’s a collection of very good stuff with a few great qualities that make it a compelling choice. In conclusion, it is a standout in its class, especially when compared dollar-for-dollar against its competitors.
