New Lexus Global Platform Reflects Commitment to Sportier Vehicles
Soon, it won’t just be the range-topping LC and LS that benefit from Lexus’ new modular platform.
Lexus has long been accused of producing “boring” cars, as you’ve probably heard way too many times. The automaker even went so far as to acknowledge that fact. But now they’re finally doing something to appease the critics. First, by instilling bolder, more exciting styling upon their lineup. And now, an entirely new Lexus global platform promises to back up that styling by providing a sportier driving experience.
The modular platform, officially known as Global Architecture-Luxury (GA-L), has already debuted in the new LC coupe. And early next year, it will underpin the all-new LS sedan. But soon GA-L will begin trickling down to more affordable nameplates. Including the redesigned NX and all-new UX crossovers. And after that? According to Automotive News, GA-L will soon underpin pretty much every Lexus vehicle on the market.
The IS and GS sedans will likely receive the Lexus global platform when they’re redesigned in 2019 or 2020. That’s also the same time frame Automotive News expects to see a new GA-L equipped RC coupe. The NX and RX should follow in 2020 or 2021. And the mid-size ES is expected to make the switch next year as part of a major redesign.
The infusion of a sportier platform into all of these unibody vehicles is sure to help Lexus shatter a lot of preconceived notions about the brand. That, along with the plan to offer an expanded series of “F” performance packages, that is. And frankly, we couldn’t be more pleased. Because who doesn’t want a more responsive, better handling Lexus? Whether you drive a crossover or a sedan, the simple act of driving should be fun. And Lexus is betting the house that you’ll agree.
