Meta-Review: 2016 Lexus RX
The Lexus is an important car for Lexus for a few reasons. It’s easily their best selling car, for one thing, and thus it’s what most people think of when they hear “Lexus.” After years of updating the rest of the model line with more aggressive body work and enhanced interiors, Lexus is finally taking the big step of tinkering with their cash cow. Did their tweaking spoil what people like about RX? Or are these changes more evolutionary than revolutionary?
So, we searched the internet. We’ve had our own say too, below. What’re your thoughts on the RX? Jump into the discussion on the the forums!
Those needing final confirmation that Lexus has left behind the often-muted lines which characterized past efforts should look no further than the transformation of its best-selling model.
With a far more aggressive exterior, technology packed interior and better mechanics, the 2016 Lexus RX has been upgraded enough to remain relevant while not deviating from its winning formula.
Shockingly, it looks kinda cool now, too. Check out that glass between the C and D pillars. It’s similar to what Nissan did with the 2015 Murano, and I don’t think it looks bad on either car. That’s one way to jazz up what has traditionally been an abysmally boring car in an abysmally boring segment.
It’s hard to imagine the existing Lexus faithful not falling for this new luxury SUV. The equipment list is high, the performance reassuring – even if you have to opt for the hybrid to get a little vigor on the road – and the experience inside as cosseting as you’d expect. In fact, only the design may prove divisive, depending on how conservative Lexus fans actually are
We expect the RX will continue to be the star of the Lexus lineup. We’ll see once we drive the 2016 iteration whether the brand made a bold enough move with this redesign, or whether it risks being outshined by the growing field of competitors.
The result is a new line of RX crossovers that is evolutionary instead of revolutionary, offers a full menu of the latest technology features, and is different enough to be visually distinct without offending the sensibilities of traditional Lexus buyers.
