Lexus Dealing with a Sticky (Dashboard) Situation

Lexus Sticky Dashboard

A years-old issue still plagues Lexus as the automaker works to produce enough replacement parts.

Generally, automotive problems, TSBs, and recalls involve your typical nagging problems. Maybe there’s a defective steering problem, or perhaps a faulty transmission. But Lexus has been working to correct a very unique problem in many of its recent models – sticky dashboards. More specifically, customers who live in sunny, warm weather states are seeing their dashes nearly melt before their eyes.

The years-old problem surfaced again in a recent NBC Los Angeles “consumer investigation” segment. The segment focuses on one customer, named Sheryl Hans, who purchased a used IS only to see her dash turn into a sticky mess. Hans had always dreamed of owning a Lexus, but before long, her dash and door panels became, as she says, “sticky, almost like a tar consistency.”

For their part, Lexus has acknowledged the problem and extended warranties on their vehicles to address the issue. But repairs have come slowly as the automaker can’t source replacement parts quickly enough. This is a common conundrum facing automakers with big recalls, as we’ve most recently seen with the Takata airbag situation. But in this case, the company repaired Hans’ Lexus shortly after NBC LA contacted them.

Club Lexus members are well aware of the sticky dash problem, and it’s been covered extensively in the forums. As with any Technical Service Bulletin or recall, it’s remained a source of frustration for many. But as you can imagine, it isn’t exactly easy to churn out thousands of replacement dashes for multiple car models that, in some cases, are a generation or two old.

Regardless, we’re curious to know if you’ve dealt with a sticky dash in your Lexus. And if so, what was your experience getting it fixed? Tell us all about it in the forums!
