Lexus GX Rolls Off the Trail, Saved by Owner in Sketchy Recovery Effort
Things thankfully didn’t go wrong, but there’s a lot to learn from this sketchy Lexus GX recovery effort.
Off-roading – like any automotive-related test – is an inherently risky hobby, albeit one that can be done safely, if you know what you’re doing. However, we see some sketchy and downright dangerous driving on a pretty regular basis, much of it taking place off the pavement, and as any seasoned off-roader knows, recovery can be one of the more risky parts of this process. After all, we’ve seen people get seriously injured and even killed while trying to save their vehicles from sticky situations. Luckily, that isn’t the case with this rolled Lexus GX and its owner, who was out wheeling by himself when disaster struck.
One of the main rules of off-roading is to always have a buddy with you, who can come in handy not only as a spotter, but also a backup in the event that you get injured or stranded. That much is made clear in this video from TikTok user and Lexus GX owner Overlandingmydeadbody, who clearly has quite a bit of experience off-roading. Regardless, he was out enjoying the Hatfield McCoy trails in West Virginia recently, out in the middle of nowhere, when disaster struck.
“It was just a lame mistake that got me sliding down the bank sideways,” he said. “I was going to walk away and hike back. It was pouring rain, I had no cell service and thought about how I was going to get home and get my vehicle back. The snorkel was being force fed water and I didn’t think it had a chance. Then I took a picture and thought about it. I watched enough YouTube videos on vehicle recoveries and I got this. So got it up and drove it 300 miles back home and parked it. I can’t believe the battery made it!”

Using his Harbor Freight winch, the GX owner was indeed able to save his big-bodied SUV from its predicament, but not without taking some pretty huge risks. As we can see in the video, he crosses under the cables, keeping tension on them as he repositions the winch – no blanket or winch dampener is used, either. There are many, many things that could have gone wrong here, to the point where one has to wonder – would it have been better to just leave the vehicle and walk back to civilization?
