Lexus GS-C “Coupe” Coming?
For years here on Club Lexus members have made photoshops and talked about their desire for a Lexus GS coupe. The GS has always been very athletic looking with coupe like influence in the design each generation.
With the SC taking a break, Lexus offers the LFA and the IS-c hardtop
convertible as their only two door offerings, quite a stretch. If Ben J. Mitchell, Lexus’ product planner manager has his way, the GS Coupe will happen. “I’d like to do a coupe,” he told Inside Line.
“We’re really trying to increase the emotional qualities of our brand. We want to emphasize exterior styling and dynamics.” According to Mitchell, Lexus is at the moment involved in a “fairly active study of coupe opportunities.”
According to Mike Michels, Lexus’ external communications vice president, the brand does want to expand its lineup. “Lexus has aspirations to have a full model line and global reach,” he told Inside Line during the same conversation.
This makes sense as Lexus has stated they want to continue to expand the lineup and a GS-c could go against vehicles from the Audi S5 to the BMW 6 series coupe. Like the Germans this being based off the sedan can keep costs low instead of developing a new platform. If it came to market it would be the only Japanese coupe offered in the 50k-80k price range (estimated) so in that regard it would be a niche in itself. Could a GS F coupe follow? I guess we are getting ahead of ourselves but it is VERY encouraging to hear Lexus want to build this coupe.
