Is a New Supra Coming Without BMW’s Help?
Toyota, one of the world’s largest automakers, and the world’s largest tease, has been tempting us with a revived Supra for what seems like decades now. The FT-1 concept finally showed off what we all thought the new Supra would look like, but Toyota has yet to put it into production. Then, there were stories that BMW and Toyota would be working together on a sports car. Would that be the Supra? Now, there’s an entirely new theory.
Jeff Perez over at BoldRide believes that a new Supra is definitely coming, and that it’ll not be based on any joint-platform work with BMW. Perez cites a few examples, and they all seem to really make sense.
For example, Lexus just spent a lot of time and money in developing the all-new platform for the LC 500. Toyota will want to get the most bang for their buck out of the product, so it’d make sense to see a Toyota-badged variant of that vehicle.
Also, Toyota has said that a new Supra would be a pure Toyota project, if they were to do it. A joint Toyota / BMW project would likely result in a new Z4 and a smaller roadster for Toyota, but not the big, bad Supra that we all want. It makes sense that Toyota wouldn’t want to share their performance flagship (the Supra) with any other manufacturer.
Finally, Perez believes that consumer demand will force Toyota to build the Supra. While I don’t think people clamouring for one on the Internet would convince Toyota to do it, we do believe they’d sell every single one they build.
