Do New Lexus Trademarks Really Tell Us Anything?

I don’t know whose job it is to check the trademark filings on the regular, but someone at AutoGuide is on it.

Reportedly, Lexus has filed three new automobile trademarks, which give protection to the names UX200, UX250, and UX250h.

For the record, if you’re looking for hard news, you already got it. The rest of this story is merely conjecture. But how would the Internet even work without conjecture?

If new models do come about with this particular nomenclature, AutoGuide reasons that “these new names seem like a perfect fit for a new seven-seat SUV that is rumored to arrive at Lexus sometime in late 2016.” We discussed a while back that this new model would be called the TX, but AutoGuide thinks the UX name would be more fitting, considering the new three-row SUV should hopefully be coming soon.

While the 7-seater is still likely, and desired by many dealers (though perhaps not as much as the RC F convertible, which was essentially killed off by it), not everyone agrees with AutoGuide‘s trademark assessment.

Spwolf posted on the forum that “obviously this is CT based, or C-HR based i guess… you can see it from powertrains, and 250h sounds good too.” He goes on to say: “From the engines, we see that this is smaller than NX. Interesting that it has much needed 250h, much better for Lexus than 1.8 from Prius.”

So we’re either talking about a really big SUV, or a really small one. Or nothing at all. What do you think?
