This article applies to the Lexus IS (2005-2013).

Puddle lights are a popular feature in most vehicle models. They are a nice safety feature and also add a sleek, luxurious look to the Lexus IS. Here is a step by step guide to successfully installing side mirror puddle lights on your own. With a little creativity, you can replace your old lights with LEDs, colored lights, or simply standard side mirrors. If the job is too difficult, visit your nearest dealership or auto body shop for assistance.

Materials Needed

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 2 new side mirror puddle lights
  • Vaseline
  • Credit card or letter opener

Step 1 - Position the mirror

Move the mirror as shown in the photo to create easy access to the bottom screw on the outside of the mirror.

Pro Tip

Use Vaseline to lubricate the inside of the new light, making it easy to slide it into the side mirror. Slowly remove the mirror from the pocket. If pulled out too quickly, there is a chance the mirror may become scratched.

Step 2 - Remove the screws

Using a long Phillips head screwdriver will help to loosen the screws.

Step 3 - Separate the housing halves

Now that you have both outside screws removed, separate the housing halves by using a plastic prying tool. A credit card or a letter opener will work, too.

Step 4 - Replace the bulb

Replace the bulb using a 194 style bulb. This can be done by twisting the puddle lamp housing off.

Step 5 - Check the lights and re-assemble mirror

Check if the bulb lights are working before you begin the reassembling work. Turn the ignition to the on position, and open the door to see if the light goes on. If the light works, slowly take your time while installing the new light.
