Can new TPMS sensors work without programming?
I have a 2006 IS 350 (pre-April build date). I bought a used set of Toyota/Lexus 42607-30030 TPMS sensors for a set of winter wheels. I installed them two weeks ago fully expecting the tire inflation light to go off until they are programmed in the car. Nothing happened.
I know the TPMS system and light both work because one of my summer tires dropped in pressure when it first got cold this fall. The light went off then.
Anyone else encounter this?

Don't everyone respond at once! LOL
I should not have pushed my luck with yesterday’s post. After two weeks of driving, the idiot light related to the unprogrammed TPMS sensors popped on while I was idling on the side of the road today.
Any ideas why there was a two week delay? Very strange.
I guess I am off to the local Toyota dealer to get the new set programmed to the car.

If you have the original sensors near the car (ie- in the garage), the car will sense them at start up and thus the light will remain off for sometimes 15-20 minutes until it tries retrieving the info again.
That's probably why your light doesn't come on even though you don't have the new sensors programmed

It really is bizarre. Yes, the original set is in the garage with the car, but this morning the light was on at startup and then went off by the time I left my neighborhood. It stayed off the whole trip to work.
When I leave from work (i.e. well out of range from old sensors) the light is typically off.
I will have them programmed anyway, but I was just wondering if anyone else has encountered this and what else might cause it.

Where do you get TPMS sensors for? I have a 2008 IS 350 and am looking to get winter tires. however, for now, I will be taking my summer tires off and mounting them on my original stock rim. Over the next few months, I hope to find some stock rims just like mine and I'll put my summer tires on there and switch back once the weather warms up. Do I need TPMS sensors now for the tire swap on my stock rims?

Since my IS was built before April 2006, I needed the earlier TPMS sensors (PN 42607-30030). Yours being a newer one, the sensors should be much easier to find and probably cheaper too. You need PN 42607-33021.
You'll also need the TPMS sensor replacement kit. It includes a replacement valve stem, aluminum ferrule nut, aluminum washer, rubber grommet and dust cap. I got mine at Firestone for about $4 or 5 per wheel.
Be sure to get nickel plated valve stems (standard are brass) or they may fuse themselves into your newer TPMS sensors by galvanic corrosion over time.
