Default Spring Compressing - How Much Squeezing Needed?

I rented a spring compressor tool because I need to replace the mounting base/cap (the thing that sits on top of the strut assembly).

I've compressed the spring but how do I know when I've compressed it enough?
I'm afraid that if not enough, there will still be pressure on that top nut and the spring will go flying across the room.

Thanks

So that's alot of squeezing, right?
Sounds like the top and bottom coils are gonna have to be "pulled away" from the strut top/bottom, right?

Man, I just think "wow, that compressor has the weight of the front end" in it's jaws" and then I get a little nervous. Kinda like I'm putting my life in the hands of a $50 buck tool.

Wrap a small chain or metal string around them for safety reasons.
