Default Are brake shims necessary?

I'm going to change the front pads, do I need to buy a new brake shim set? I threw the old one away on the last brake job.

I'll just skip ordering the shim set and see if it needs it. Thanks guys.

when i replaced my axxis pads with the oem pads there was no space for my shims to fit so I did without them, same thing with teh spring clips. Basically the shims are there to take up the extra space when the caliper is not hitting the pad.

replaced my pads and just installed the pads without grease or shims. I like it dry.

No probs with braking or noise... for me.

buy aftermarket instead of OEM and some have their own shim set included-like akebono proact.

If you haven't replaced the brakehardware (the clips, fit kit) you may want to consider that at same time. cheap also if you go aftermarket, and it's not really rocket science.

I mentioned this before, but OEM pads have a huge chamfer cut out, most likely a redesign to sacrifice stopping power for noise. I always felt shortchanged knowing Lexus basically cut out 30-40% of the braking material.

definitely doesn't look like the original design idea for the pads was followed...

if your using stock pads.. for sure use a shim kit.. keeps it quiet and no squeaks.. aftermarket.. do what they recommend.
