Default Q about new steering rack bushings

My '03 GS3 only has 50K miles and steering is tight with no vibration. I'm going to be upgrading sway bar bushings and wanted to know if I should wait to do steering rack or if new poly bushings will improve handling? Thanks

It depends on the bushings itself. Not all bushings go bad at a specific mileage.

Check the DIY bushing thread. it'll show you how to check if you need new bushings or not.

The steering rack bushings will get rid of the slop in the steering no matter what mileage your car has. I did mine when I had about 19k miles and I could feel the difference. The stock steering rack bushings are made of a really soft flexible rubber while the poly ones are hard and rigid.

The Daizen steering rack bushings tighten up the steering feel I think. Its like a different car. I did the ball joints and tie rods at the same time, so its hard to be sure how much each is contributing to the improvement. Used to be there was a really vague connection with the front wheels but now there is far more steering feel. That extra effort to finesse the car through a hard turn is no longer needed. Now its point and shoot.

If you do the Daizen steering rack bushing make sure you lube them with grease before installing them. When i first put mine in I didn't and they made noise. I since have lubed up the big C bushing and all noise is now gone. I used Mobil 1 synthetic grease.

It's an awesome mod by the way - do it!

It's not suppose to make noises since the rack doesn't induce any rotational force on the bushings.

But I guess greasing can't hurt. You're the first with noise. My rack doesn't even budge with the bushings on.

There was another CL member that posted about this -- so there's at least 2 of us. The noise was more of a sticking kind of noise that I could feel in the steering wheel. It's gone now with the grease!

Perhaps the rack was dirty? I cleaned off my rack before I installed the bushings. I guess if dirt was rubbing, then that could have been an issue.

The installer greased them (and the sway bar links) when he did the install and theres no squeaks. Just 3 days though, so the jury is still out. We'll see what happens on a cold day this winter when the material is less pliable.

The installer was real matter of fact about using this grease with polyurethane bushings. Maybe he was just refering to the sway links though. I should ask him about the rack bushings.

I'm getting a noise when the car is stopped as I turn the steering wheel is just one turn before reaching the end. Am I supposed to grease the inside between the bushing & metal collar?
