Red face New Stock Brakes?

I just got back from the dealership.
They told me my front and rear brakes are down to 1mm.

They wanted $330 for front and the same for the rear.
Well I told them I would not have that kind of money for at least a few weeks.
I thought the guy was gonna throw a fit.

First question is what do you guys think of that price.

I have 17" wheels and stock brakes.
Should I stay with the Lexus pads?
They seem like they work just fine in my opinion.
Is their something else that would be better?

I'll bet I could get the pads thru Carson and have another garage do the job for a lot less.

Of course they also wanted me to have a power steering flush and a 75k maint. service.
No telling how much those last two would have added to the bill.
Again the guy just could not believe I did not want to do them.

Hey thanks in advance for the help.

F--- that! I use to always pay the Lexus dealership to do brakes on my cars. Then I found ClubLexus and did some research and put all new rotors and pads on by myself 2 months ago and I've never even watched a brake job get done. It's not hard man you can put those pads on pretty darn easy. I bought Rotora rotors and put on Akebono pads from Tirerack.com and my car stops great and is super quiet with no brake dust. I saved myself a lot of money and now I can do it for ever and never pay again.

If you have any questions or want to try it yourself just ask. Good Luck

If you are happy with the current/stock setup, then go for the the Axxis Deluxe Plus pads and then have these installed at a local shop.

Smile Brake Pads

Well I'm not good at mechanic type stuff with the car and frankly would rather spend my limited time off doing something else. So I will probably buy some pads and have a shop that I trust put them on.

GUNRU-GS4 can you tell me why you would get the Akebono pads instead of the stock pads?
What qualites do they have that the stock ones lack?

HKGS300 I'll ask you the same question what qualities do the Axxis Deluxe Plus pads have
that make you like them better than the stock pads?

Hey thanks for the input guys

I tried the AXXIS pads on the rear of my 99 GS4, and they wore out really fast. I would not buy these pads again for myself. The brake dust on the rear wheels was incredible in comparison to the front stock pads.

I changed rotors all the way around, and put new factory Toyota pads back on. The performance is back to normal.

Unless I upgrade to a bigger brake I'll stay with the stock setup. It is much easier.
Just my $.02

I did as much research about pads as I could before I purchased because I don't really have much experience with aftermarket brake stuff. As far as brake pads go I picked the Akebono Pro ceramic pads because a couple recommended them to me and I read good reviews about them. They have a little better grip than stock, they are super quiet, no break in procedure, an I have chrome rims and these are the cleanest pads I've ever used. Basically no brake dust. They are a little high in price but I don't think they are more than stock pads. They are suppose to have really good life too. I would highly recommend them. You could buy some on tirerack.com and just have a local cheap place throw them in for you.

Thanks for the review

I've been doing some research and most people seem to really like them.

Smile Brake Pads

Well I got my brake pads installed by my local garage yesterday.
Local garage charged me $361 parts and labor, before tax.
They said book time is 2.6hrs for front and rear.

Lexus Dealer wanted $660 before tax to do front and rear with stock pads.
Carson Toyota told me they would sell both front and rear stock pads for right around $100.
So even if dealer charged $200 for pads that would be $460 labor for 2.6hrs work
For the life of me I can't see how they can charge that much.

I ended up getting the Akebono ProAct Ceramic Pads.
They seem to work really well so far.

Thanks for the brake pad tip to
GUNRU-GS4

And thanks to everyone else for your input.

I will give a short review of these pads after I have them for a while.

Congrats on the savings and you got some better pads. I've got a couple thousand miles on my Akebonos right now and they are still working great.
