How to open trunk when remote doesn't work, release doesn't pull, but top opens???

My trunk gap is about 1/4 when it is closed -- just like a ball bearing would roll down it perfectly.. Pressing the trunk release adds about 1/8" so lifting up the trunk involves putting my fingers in a 3/8" gap.
