Scraped rear bumper. What should I do?
I accidentally lowered the garage door onto my rear bumper and scraped it with the bolt on the garage door. Now I have a 2 in. long, 1/4 in. wide scratch. The scratch is not deep, it just took off the paint. I took it to a body shop and the guy tells me I can go one of two routes. 1) Blending the scrape. $275. Blending involves sanding off just the clearcoat around the damaged area, repainting the area and clearcoating just the center of the area he sanded. The edge of the sanded area will be buffed with a compound until it is shiny. He says he will not guarantee the blending because of this reason. The unclearcoated border might have problems in the future. I definitely don't want that as I plan on keeping the car and modifying it later on. 2) Taking the bumper off and repainting it and clear coating it $475. He says this is the best way because this way the whole bumper will be be clear coated. Has anyone ever had either procedures done to the car? How well did it hold up? Is this guy trying to overcharge me? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It sure looked 'new' to me. I took it into a dealership and the sales manager could tell. I also took it into a speed shop and they could tell also. They pointed out to me that the part that was fixed was not quite as smooth as the rest of the car. Maybe the bodyshop i went to didnt do a perfect job, but it looks good enough to me and 99% of the ppl out there.

You probably wont be able to tell the difference - and as you point out virtually no one else will either.
HOWEVER, if the pros can tell (this happened to me with another vehicle) then this could have profound impact on resale value. I would not lie about the condition on my vehicle but neither would I volunteer about any repainting etc.
If a pro can tell and you sell it/trade it to a dealer, etc. your resale value will likely be negatively impacted.
