Default Engine and Trans Mounts

I took my car in to the dealer for service recently and they mentioned that I need to have the engine and trans mounts replaced. They quoted $1100 to change them and also mentioned that this is a common problem with SC430s.

Anyone else have to change their mounts?

Does this price seem high for that?

My 2002 has about 42K on it.

Thanks in advance!

I just changed my motor mounts monday. The driver side was completely seperated and just resting in place and the passenger side was barely hanging on. Put it this way, when the passenger side mount came off the car it was almost completely seperated. I twisted it and it came apart in my hand. I did it myself so I dont know how much labor would be. I know of a few SC430s that have needed to have the motor mounts replaced. I think everyone should have them checked out.

Please do post once you get the engine mounts replace for the SC430:
1. How much does it cost?
2. How much better is the ride?

I think I have the same issue with Engine mounts on my 05 SC430. When I start the engine, I notice the car jolt a little bit more than normal (Compare to my IS350 and RX330 anyway). When I hit the accelerator hard to semi hard, I can feel a littel shake to the steering wheel. Probably, not wheel balancing as it goes away once I keep a steady speed - also, I just put in new wheels and tires (assumed that it was balance properly at the tire shop). I plan to get this engine mounts issue taking care of once I saved up some cash.

I feel the same kinda shaking you do.

I've posted this about a week or 2 ago. Felt it with every used SC430 I test drove.

I just bought mine last week after paying out $250 to have a Lexus mechanic go throught the 163 checkpoint they need to go through in order to make it a Lexus certified car. They did not say anything was wrong with the mounts.

Baised on the prices I have been quoted for in the past, I'm guessing a Lexus dealership charges at LEAST twice as much for their services.

Trans mount is easy to get to, the motor mounts a little more involved. A bit common with aging SC's.

What is the downfall of not having this done?

A steady vibration throughout the cabin, and eventually if they completely tear it can damage or break other parts on the car.

Does anyone know what causes the steady vibration when traveling anywhere between 50-60 miles and hour? Above and below that it's perfect.

I couldn't find it with a search, but I read about someone having a similar situation at about 40-50 mph. I think people were saing it's common. Forgot what causes it...

The engine mount not only keeps the drivetrain in place it also absorbs any harmonic vibration from the engine. If the engine is loose it is possible to damage internal components though I have yet to read of this happening to the Lexus V8 as it is built pretty stout. On water cooled Porsches, a busted engine mount can cause a broken oil pickup tube from the vibration which will result in oil starvation.
Either way I would get it repaired. The trans mount is very easy to replace. The engine mounts are where the labor is at.
