door panel repair

Below is a pic of the window frame where the craftsman (best description for this person I can use) used a mesh to re-enforce all of the tabs and binding areas including the door panels on my '92 SC300.
Repairing these panels is quite an art as the design was poor to start with and so many of our cars have door panels falling apart, splitting, and just plain failing.

Thats a nice fix, did you have a body shop do it or something?

^^ I've also seen foil tape used for repairing those broken plastic tabs on the window trim piece. I went a step further and solved the cause of the infamous cracked trim at the base of the window, filling the basically unsupported back side with expanding foam and shaving it down to fit the contour of the door frame.

He claims (and I believe him) to have repaired hundreds of SC door panels over the years and when working on mine he showed all the poor design flaws and break points and what he had to do to re-enforce all of the attachment points. The heavy doors and the fact you almost have to slam the doors to get them to close is a large contributor.

Found this free lance guy via a reference from the audio shop. He is kept totally booked by all of the San Jose area South Bay dealerships repairing leather and vinyl seats and dashes. Was lucky to get him to take a Saturday appointment where he spent over 9 hours fixing both L/R door and window frame panels - it was expensive but worth it since trying to find decent, used panels at junk yards is now next to impossible.

I only have some of the "before" showing how shattered the anchor points were. He had finished re-building the panels and had them installed when I returned. Lucky I go the pictures of the window frames when he was midway through the repairs.
Where in California are you? He is in Santa Clara. PM me if you want his information.
