Default SC400 shift **** relay...

Hi everyone & thank you for responding to this thread...
I have a 92 SC400, & this morning I started my car to go to the mechanic shop. After the car was warmed up & ready to go I tried to put it in gear with no dice. I have to press the SHIFT-LOCK button down to get in gear. My tranny was rebuilt and I know there are some gremlins with my engine hence the trip to the mechanic shop, but even with the engine troubles the shifter always went into gear. Could it be a bad relay in the shifting mechanism causing this? I searched on CL but didn't find a thread that relates to my problem with an answer. please help me, any info that leads to a solution is truly appreciated.
Thank you.

Did you pull off the cover and make sure there aren't any connection issues? Loose clip? Wire that has been pulled out of the plug? I'd do a visual inspection first as I have never heard of this problem and I've been here a while

I took the cover off and checked the actuation of the shift assembly moving, and the only flaw I came across is the shift **** button doesn't return to the up position when released, you have to actually depress the SHIFT-LOCK button manually to get it to return.

Default update...

For several weeks I had to press the shift lock button to engage a gear. My car had been running fine otherwise (knock on wood) so I didn't bother to investigate the problem with the shifter. A few days ago both of my brake lights weren't working so I took it to my mechanic to sort out the problem. I thought it was as simple as just changing the 2 bulbs, but the mechanic told me it's uncommon for both brake bulbs to go out. After inspecting the problem it turned out to be the relay/switch under the dash that links the brake pedal assembly to the brake lights That switch had a short, so my brake lights weren't working properly. I mentioned the problem with the shifter & he said that this was directly related; as a result of the brake switch going bad the shifter assembly would not correspond & select the chosen gear. So basically the brake switch was at fault for a while, only after the brake lights stopped working did it become more present. Thankfully this problem has been sorted out & I can shift into gear as I please.

^^ So basically, it was the looking for your foot to be on the brake before it would let the tranny shift out of park.
