garage-door opener
Was at a Lex dealer the other day getting the bulbs for the climate control (another subject). And I looked at a '99 SC they had. Noticed the garage door opener built into the visor - very nice. These should be on all '98 and up.
Now the question:
Are all the electronics housed in the visor? i.e. can I swap out the visor on my '93 SC400 for one of these - maybe get if from a junkyard?
Thanks,
Ryan

Hey Ryan:
I do not have the answer to your question, sorry. But a while ago I did some demographics on the folks here and there was not one person with a 1999 SC400, so if that feature was just on the 1999 you may not get much response here.
In any case, if you call up your local Lexus parts department guy he can help you out I would bet! His diagrams on the 1999 would show if the garage door opener would interface with other parts or if it is stand alone and just in the visor. My bet is that it somehow gets power from the dome lite area so there would be a little bit of wiring.
That is a nice feature to have and let me know what you find out.

Thanks Red93SC400. I'll go by the dealer this week and ask. I was thinking that since the mirror already has a light and hence power, this would be the easiest addition for Lexus to make without having to change anything but the visor. I'd really like to get my hands on a used one, but that is doubtful for a 98-00. It looked really sharp on the 99 I saw last week.

Yah, let us know what you find. I would like to order one of these from Lexus parts. You are right. The driver's side visor does have the illuminated mirror so maybe they are going to use that power tap. Lets hope.

Hey Johnny SC!
That is cool! How does this work? Does the unit in the visor learn the code from your door opener and then memorize it? Do you have pictures of it that you can post?

There are three buttons on the visor. TO set your garage door, you hold down the first button and then press the garage door opener for a good 5 seconds. It somehow picks up the code and then you are all set. I will snap some photos for you guys and I will scan the owners manual that details this feature.

The built in garaged door opener you saw on the 1999 SC is called the Homelink system. I made my own built in homelink system in my visor of my SC. I bought one of those universal keychain garage dooropeners (2 buttons and light) from Brookstone for about $30. I then dismantled it and painted it khaki/tan color to match the rest of the plastic in the car. I then attached the internals and this painted piece to the visor. It looks just as good as factory and I saved a couple hundred bucks. I will post pics when I get another digital camera.

Yeah, it is called Homelink, I could not remember for the life of me what it was called. The dealer mentioned the feature a whole bunch of times when I bought the car but I wasn't really listening.

Talked to the dealer today. They said no reason they know of it shouldn't work (I've got 70% confidence this guy knows whats up). He said $205 for the visor. I guess I've become adjusted to bending over for replacement parts - I'm actually thinking about it.
