$1200 for regular service for '97 SC300
Hi,
A few months ago, I took my '97 SC300 to a nearby Lexus dealership in Beverly Hills, California. I was quoted $1200 for the 60000 mi. service. I ended up paying a total of $1600 for the service plus additional repairs. They replaced the cap and rotor and windshield wipers.
I know my car is a Lexus but $1200 for regular service? Is this normal? And do all Lexus dealerships charge the same or do the rates depend on location? Maybe I shouldn't have taken it to the Beverly Hills dealership or to a Lexus dealership, for that matter.
I'm attaching a copy of the estimate. Please let me know what you guys think.
Thanks.

inspection takes time. Lexus labor rate is $100 - $120+ per hour depending on which dealership you go to. That is where the high cost comes from

fawk that. 75% of that is inspection. Do you think they really "inspected" anything?? I seriously doubt they inspect everything
Next time take your car into a private local non dealer mechanic. They do the same quality work if not more then the dealer.
I know because my dad owns a auto repair shop and has been in business for 20 years.

As for your bill..damn dude...they took advantage of you. Like has been stated, most of it was "inspection" and "if necessary" crap. "Inspection of condition of tires...and brakes" Wow. Probably something you can do yourself, no?
They pocketed a grand from simply eyeballing your car.

Well, I hope for 5 grand she got the brakes and timing belt done..along with all the ignition parts, all the belts and hoses, and a full drivetrain wide fluid change..5 grand? Jeez..
I noticed on that bill it said they changed the fluid in the LSD..I wonder if his car HAS an LSD? If it didn't I'd be going back and stating FRAUD...

Thanks for the input, guys! You've confirmed what I've suspected for a long time-- that I've been had. This was a costly lesson. Did I mention that they also wanted to re-mount the engine for another $1000 or so? I had to put my foot down on that one.

Wow,
This is what I see wrong. They automatically balance the tires for you? What if you didn't need it? How do you charge someone to clean their battery terminals?? I'm one of them and I see this as a wrong act. Sadly, there is nothing you can do but to kick rocks because it's all part of a set service schedule interval(theirs anyways). We don't start doing things unless we've inspected everything and road tested the vehicle AND received authorization by the customer. That's a bunch of baloney, thanks for the info...remind me not to apply there in the future.
On another note, those prices are very much real. Given that our dealer did all of the work performed by Beverly Hills, it would have cost you the same. Did they give you a discount at least? I would have given you 10% off the whole bill at least.

its a costly lesson. dealerships prey on the less knowledgeble to charge for their time and service. a couple of years ago i had a problem with the engine cutting off during use and they could only offer a tune up/service as a solution(they couldnt and didnt fix the problem ). it was like the roughly the same price low 1k but i managed to cut the price down more than half by using my own parts and cutting out the services that i can do on my own).
