Default 1995 lexus sc 400 regular vs premium gas

So as you guys might know my 95 sc400 says premium unleaded gas only. I told this to a friend who was gonna pick up gas for me so I could drive it to the gas station because I had ran out.. he then looks at me with a crazy look on his face and goes on about how its all a myth and that the car makers tell you this
so the gas companies can make
more money blah blah blah all
this other stuff about how stupid
I would be if i put premium. Any
thoughts on this from you guys?
Will i ruin my engine if I use regular unleaded gas. Btw excuse my grammar.

The engine will more than likely knock if you don't run at least 91 Octane in it, your friend doesn't know what he's talking about.

Should be fine unless you go WOT at every stop light. If you're cruising most of the time then I'd say it's ok. I've been using 87 on my LS400 for a long time. I don't really push it hard. I've floored it sometimes and it's fine. As for me my LS is a beater car. Bought it cheap with intention of driving it for few years and if it breaks I'll get rid of it but so far no problem. But as for my TTZ premium fuel everytime

You likely won`t do the engine any harm, however you will notice the throttle response is softer and fuel mileage will suffer. The ECU will sense any engine knocking and retard the timing accordingly.

As a comparison, the Hyundai Equus V8 recommends premium fuel for it`s 11.5 compression engine to make 429 hp. but the dealer brochure and online specs say that if you use regular fuel the power will drop to 421.
