Question Center Console Flip-Out Cup Holder for SC400

I have two conflicting reports on the Center Console Cup Holder for the SC400. My 1994 SC400 doesn't have a flip-out cup holder. I was advised against the installation since this wasn't a factory installed option on my car, and the expense of a retrofit. I was recently informed that all you need to do is the following: "There is a filler plate in that slot that pops out and then you pop in the flip-out cup holder." This sounds very easy; then again, that's why I'm asking. Thank you for the input.

I have a 93 400 and yes that's all you do. You need to pull the surround out so you can get behind and uncle the backing plate. The cup holder pops right in. As for functionality I would only put a 12 Oz can in it. It is very unstable and tends to lean one way or the other.

Don't use it though. It will soak your electronics.

Slightly off-topic, but related to the two preceding replies: Has anyone managed to upgrade the spring that holds the two flaps up? Mine sags easily, which sounds like the above spillage problems, so I never use it other than the smile factor of watching it spread its wings. The spring seems very integrated, though.

I've found that cup holder to be useless. I actually liked my 92 SC which had an open slot, it allowed me to put my phone or wallet in pretty conveniently. Think about it, a cup holder that you won't use or a slot for your phone/wallet, etc...

I haven't found the fold out cupholder to be an issue with introducing liquids to electronics. Then again, I usually only put an enclosed cup of coffee or enclosed iced tea there temporarily... and never when I'm about to go over bumpy roads.

Mine also came without a factory cup holder. It was easy to add. Way better than the aftermarket Pro-Fit VSM mount I used to have in that blank space (which was a good idea.. but rattled).

t2d2, I don't know if the springs can be replaced or upgraded. To me it's a slightly fragile design and those side flaps aren't perfect in my car either. If I began to notice they sag so much they become unusable I might try taking a look at it, replace it (if possible) or just remove it. I kept my original blank plate just in case.

Biddles, I can appreciate that argument as well. That blank area can have many alternative uses. I never thought the factory accessory cupholder was useful until I bothered to try it though.

For a manual SC at least it's the main console cupholder I really dislike. It's in such a bad position for function but in such a great position aesthetically. Actually, I think aesthetics at the sacrifice of function may win out for me regarding that

My cup holder works OK-ish for a can of soda or similarly sized drink that's not fully open at the top. I don't use it, though, since my driving style tends to be somewhat incompatible (the aforementioned electronics issues are a fear I have.) I do, however, use it to hold a plastic trash bag. Works pretty well for that.

I've used mine about 3 or 4 times to hold a bottle of water. It's a pretty flimsy part but it got a lot of "pooh ahhh's" in the early 1990s when nothing like it had been designed in everyday cars.

It looks good in the closed position. The open slot just looks like a car that was not optioned too well so to just have the holder and never use it makes the car seem more upmarket. Um, well considering these cars are virtually worthless now I'll just say it looks better.

The SC400 flip-out cup holder (or butterfly cup holder as listed on ebay) should've been standard, not an option; looks like something is missing or forgotten at the factory. I'd like to complete the car even though the value is declining every year. Well, maybe the SC will be more valuable in a few years, as a classic; the SC still looks good and good SCs are rare. This was a car many of us wanted in the 90s. Appreciate the input and the ease to retrofit the part. I'll complete the installation just to complete the car and for the occasional demo purpose; not likely I'd use the cup holder either.
