Default 1997 260hp differences??

I found a 4.0 engine locally with low miles from a 1997 for a song, thought about getting it as a back-up (or toy to play with) for my 1992 SC400. I know it is a direct fit but they were rated for an extra 10hp, does anyone know the difference??

The 1992 is a non interference motor versus the 1997 is. The intereference means if the timing belt breaks on the 92, you will be stranded with no harm to the engine. The 97 breaks and you have head and valve problems. Also the 1997 has a VVTI motor.. thus increasing the HP.

The VVTi wasn't until 1998 when it was bumped to 290hp, from what I have researched. Could the 1997 just have different camshaft timing or different compression?

^the 95-97 1uz is rated 10 more horsepower and than the big leap to the vvti 1uz added another 30hp.

supposedly the compression went from 10.1.1 to 10.4.1, also different fuel rails(cast to alloy) if that makes any difference? i have no idea.... (info from lextreme i believe)

EDIT: yup, i remembered correctly! i feel like a little 1uz genius now

Yeah vvti def didn't come till 98, all 95+motors were interference though. I also believe (don't quote or flame me if I'm slightly wrong) the rods of the 95+ are diff and the comp was upped. Personally I like non-interferance, slap a turbo on it or supercharger!

Matches what I just found too, the compression ratio was bumped to 10.4... That would explain why it was an interference engine too... You rock!

I believe the vvti change happened in the middle of the model 97 year, so some are vvti, some arent.

^ that's not correct. There are no 97 vvti's.
However, they most likely built a lot of the 98's in 1997.

Yah, you are right. I remembered that the change happened in 1997 but forgot that it didnt effect the cars until the next model year.

Hy!

The 97 1UZ have a newer ECU, with OBD.II, before, only OBDI and slower.
