Rats, I have black sapphire pearly on my ES 350 and really like it. One new color (allegedly), black opal mica looks purple to me, and therefore uninteresting.

yes black opal is more of a purple. There is also an all new color, stargazer black, which from the name would imply a color like the saphire but with metallic specs.
I ordered a 2011 RX in stargazer without knowing what it will look like. Hopefully, its not different from what its name suggests

Although I have had many issues with the paint quality, and the nicks & scratches, swirl marks, and stone chips, I still think Saphire Black Pearl is the best color in Lexus' lineup. Too bad they could not get it right and rather than fixing it, just dumped it.
Not that I was planning to get another Lexus in a couple of years anyway.

im sure they are fixing it by adding metallic specs to it. They cant keep the same name and change the color...it would be too confusing. Changing the composite of the paint requires a different paint code and therefore a different name.

does anyone know how to interpret the lexus paint codes?
the discontinued black saphire pearl has a paint code 8U0 and another blue, the cerulean blue, has a paint code 8U9 so that tells me the 8 means blue.
the obsidian black has a paint code 212 and the new stargazer black has the paint code 217...
so maybe its more black than blue

wish they would bring back the Black Garnet Pearl color they had a few years ago on the ES. that was a sweet color. (3Q2)

I loved the black sapphire pearl so much I went with the 2010. After hearing about the paint issues I opted for the ding/paint/interior windshield protection. Also, knowing that the light beige leather seats always have color issues it makes more sense. Wish I could have saved this $. It was necessary on the IS because it is always getting dinged.
