Default Photo of brake light switch?

My daughter's 2005 RX330 is throwing a code of C1223 & C1249 open circuit in stop light switch and malfunction in ABS system control. Before I order the stop light switch I want to pull it out, open it up and see if I can clean the contacts. Thus, the question on the photo so I know where it is and what it looks like. I know from reading here that this is not an uncommon issue and many have had theirs replaced under warranty.

Ideas on where to start with the ABS issue? The car has 108000, all new Lexus/Toyota pads and rotors from Sewell and it stops normally.

thank you,

Got my "google foo" working here and, apparently, the two codes occur simultaneously because of the failure of the stop switch . Now I just need to see if my back will allow me to get under the dash and fix this puppy.

I have to laugh because I've done zip. I verified that brakes were working fine but then have been Ultra busy. I told my daughter that I would look at it this week .

This has been a problem with my 04. It's been replaced 3x so far, the last time the dealer fixed it for free since they did it at my cost a year prior.

Would you mind sharing the cost of this? My bad back means that lying on my back under the dash doesn't seem like a great way to spend an afternoon. If I can get this done in an affordable manner I would be all over this.

By working fine do you also mean that the brake lights come on normally when the pedal is depressed?

From a post of his in July....

My vehicle was purchased new by a family member and it had the switch replaced under the recall in 05 by the selling dealer.
I got the car in 13 and soon the switch had to be replaced again at around 50k miles. I paid labor and parts of $180 at my local Lexus dealer.

Edit : BTW, I see that you started another thread about this back in MAY 2011 :https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...ent-south.html

You really are one ultra busy guy to wait over 3 years : )

Brakes worked fine - just a switch/relay problem.

Yes, I did write asking about this but then the problem went away. That is until I gave the car to my daughter and she started driving it. The problem reoccured not too long ago.

Yes, you mentioned that. What I was asking, are the brake LIGHTS working normally. I ask because in another thread, a poster stated that if the lights are working normally, then it's not the switch.

I guess I wasn't clear. When I say brakes work fine I mean the entire system, lights and mechanical brakes. I'll read up on that switch

Ok great, thanks for clarifying. I'll have to find that post again.

Edit : Here it is....Btw, I have the ABS, VSC and blinking TPS, but no "Brake" light lit.

So I bought the brake switch. Replaced it. Turns out to be not the brake switch. If your brake lights work just fine, this problem is not your brake switch!!!! Took it to my trusted mechanic, he said it is the speed sensor of the rear right wheel. So far, not taken it back to replace the speed sensor.

Attached are some pics that will help you locate your brake switch and how to get to it. The stubby wrench came in handy.

Take the panel out completely. Lay down on the floor and loosen the brake switch nut. Once loose enough, simply sit on the door's edge and with your right hand reach the switch, as you are looking through the area where the plastic cover was earlier, which you have removed now, slowly turn the switch and remove it. The wire is connected to the switch with a small clip style attachment. Remove the wire before you turn the switch.

I suggest taking pictures of the old switch before removing it. Replace the old one with the new in exactly the same way. Test your brake switch by turning on the car and if you brake lights come on, you can shift gears, your dash lights are off then you are good to go.

Keep in mind my first advise. If you brake lights work fine, it is not your brake switch. Don't waste time and money as I did. The first brake switch I got from Auto Zone was the wrong one. See the attached picture. The wrong one is to the left. The correct one is on the right. Make sure your new switch exactly like the one on the right.

Don't rule out the speed sensors if your brake lights work fine. One sensors throws off all those lights on the dash.

Easy job. You can do it.
