he just has to pay his own deductable.
So its $500 deductable to fix a $1200 damage.
However, due to his driving record, his insurance will go up by $500 for the next 3 years making it not worth the claim.

My RX350 got hit in a parking lot, but the truck that backed into it, didn't stick around so there was no one to go after. My insurance paid for the claim, but since I wasn't driving it at the time, my rates were not effected - it was comprehensive coverage claim.
I'm not sure how your friend's situation will work out, but since he/she wasn't driving, I'd be surprised if their rates actually were effected.

DaveS, your situation is/was different. You were not held responsible for the accident. In this case the burden is 50-50.
Now I learn another loop hole favoring insurance companies... it seems from the whole cost, if each party pays their deductible, then the insurance companies benefit every time an accident is split up. At the same time, both parties pay higher premium for 3 years.
Sad which ever way you look at it.
PS: Dont forget these are the estimates for repair. There is loss of use [rental] etc and hidden damage.

I believe your friend is 100% not at fault. If I am backing out or in or whatever from a parking spot it is MY responsibility not to hit something that is stationary. If I have dark tints, or my truck is lifted or there is a blind spot, does that matter? If the guy in the truck hit a car that was parked without the door open would he be at fault? One time I was parked in a BMW 3 series and the front bumper was 2-3 inches over the line a lady came and parked in a big SUV and hit my bumper there was no damage but she told me "Oh you were over the line" and I just laughed... what does it matter?
Was the truck "Lifted?" There are very strict bumper height regulations. Many times these lifted trucks are illegal! I would figure out what the situation is and report it to the insurance company.
