Default 2005 330 rear hatch failure

Hi all,
Have had an intermittent failure of the power rear hatch. First time it happened in winter (only gets to 32 F) where hatch tries to open (using the power feature) and moves an inch before it closes back down. If I lift it manually right after the motor starts, it will go the rest of the way. Dealer replaced the struts and it worked. Now, in 110 F heat, it's doing the same thing. The car usually has to sit in the sun for awhile for it to happen, and it sometimes doesn't power close either. Is this a motor, strut, or body computer issue? Thanks for any advice. I searched some threads but mostly just issues with not working at all, but this issue seems different, or I didn't look hard enough and for that I apologize.
Regards

There was a TISB notice for the power function failing on occasion. I had mine replaced for that. As for the it trying to open but failing, it could be the entire linear actuator that needs replacing. The original TSIB is for the power hatch ECU.

Yeah, I remember that. The "body computer" for the hatch was supposedly the problem and the original solution was to fully open and close the hatch manually before trying the power opener again. If this failed, you were supposed to take it to the dealer for warranty service.

Mine had done it precisely three times in five years, and of course it would not fail on the service drive. Tuesday it happened again, this time to my wife, who figured something was wrong and closed the hatch with a good hip check. I showed her how to cycle the hatch manually and it has worked just fine since.

Thanks for the replies. Tried the opening fully manually and then closing but still hangs up after it opens a few inches. Back to the dealer. I can't tell if it's the motor or ECU; it's as if the ECU senses an obstruction so it closes back up, but it does close completely when it does this. As with other things, it's intermittent, and probably won't happen at the dealer LOL. THanks again folks!
Regards
